what works for me is to generate a sine wave (I used wavelab in windows),
then copy and paste it until it is several hours long, then insert 10
seconds of silence at the beginning. Start rolling your sine wav recording
from another machine with a known good soundcard, and start your test
machine recording in the silent period. Its super easy to sync up to your
original wav by deleting all the silence at the beginning.

Along these lines RME provides a number of audio test files that you might
be interested in. One advantage of getting them from a known source is the
ability to do level matching throughout your system.

simple task to clip the silence (or anything else for that matter). I
haven't yet found a Linux tool that makes it quite as easy. Audacity new
(version 1.2.0-pre1) vertical scale expansion feature is inadequate to
examine samples down to within 1 amplitude bit of silence (-90 dB for a
16-bit sample, or -138 for a 24-bit sample). Know of any Linux tools that
provide that capability?

I would like to know if you have tried rezound. With rezound you can
cut parts of a music and do some other kind of editing.

Might that depend on your display resolution? If you zoom an audio
file to 'fit window' vertically, you're going to see more detail the
higher resolution your display has, surely?
Personally, I find 1024x768 isn't enough when viewing multiple tracks.

No, because when you zoom vertically you see a progrssive smaller range of
amplitudes, hopefully around any value that you want (e.g., 0 dB). You
should be able to open it up so that you only see 1 bit of amplitude
on-screen at 32-bit word widths, and you should be able to choose any 1-bit
section that you want with the proper labeling so that you know what you're
looking at.
Audacity doesn't do this yet.

Sweep (http://sweep.sf.net) does this - roll the mousewheel on the left
hand dB scale (rolling it on the display zooms the time axis - very
nice). Not sure how you do it without a wheeled mouse, though.
