Hi all,
Oh...FWIW.... I LOVE you guys! :)
Meanwhile,
I would like a list of preferred apps from anyone who responds. If you
had an Audio LiveCD you could pop in your machine and boot it up, what
would you most prefer to see there?
I have sampled them all recently and while they look great, work
reasonably well and have lots of stuff in them application wise, I'm not
convinced the simplicity is as honed as it can be.
1. What are your top 10 critical "must have" audio apps?
2. What are your top 5 utility apps?
3. Considering a mid powered box, (say 1800mhz, 1 gig ram, etc) what
is your favorite WM or desktop?
4. How many people *don't* have at least a DVD read only drive that
you can boot from?

Well, my laptop has a CDRW/DVD drive that it can boot from. The desktop
machine doesn't have a DVD drive at all.

Rosegarden only allows one line of lyrics per note, apparently. I have
Lilypond here, but I'd prefer a GUI app that could handle it. Denemo's
online help mentions a kludge that sort of lets you do multiple lyrics,
but mentions that they're not sure what problems might result from it.
Sounds like this is one area where the commercial Windows apps are ahead
of Linux apps?

If you prefer gui driven scoring, probably. However I cn do so many
tricks with emacs, the command line, scripts and my .abc files that I
prefer that over a gui.

To clarify why I asked...
squashfs is no longer limited to 2gb(?) LiveCDs can now be made larger
than 700mb, hence requiring the use of a DVD (ergo LiveDVD I guess)
If you dont have a DVD reader..then its a bit hard to boot from said
LiveDVD.
THANKS for all responses so far. This REALLY helps to get consensus of
the most commonly required apps and not create unnecessary clutter!

Everybody I know has DVD but I have not heard of anybody booting from

I'm also interested in SuperCollider, but it's still completely
unintelligible to me and would probably never be "critical" even if I
understood it.

for data structures, and that you had made knobs and sliders from data

I have sampled them all recently and while they look great, work reasonably
well and have lots of stuff in them application wise, I'm not convinced the
simplicity is as honed as it can be.

KDE (even on my 800mhz 384megs thinkpad), but i can wrk with prettymuch
everything from ratpoison to gnome...

I do have a DVD drive i can boot from. I dislike downloading DVD iso's though,
because they are so big :). Two persons i know don't have a DVD drive (one of
them doesn't have _any_ bootable media besides his hard drive though. Man
that was a hassle getting the OS on there)
