For a sustain pedal, thats true. But there are other factors like
portability and additional hardware. Without modifying the hardware the
sustain pedal can't be connected directly to the pc. You have to use a
midi keyboard, I think. So you can't carry these things with you around.
A sustain-pedal to usb would be fine, but I am no hardware guru, so I
don't have a clue.
Well the cheapest hack I could think of, is to dig out an unused/broken USB keyboard, and
just hook up a cheap footswitch from a MIDI keyboard up to the wire for the
"pause" key:

Not much hardware hacking expertise required there, just know how to solder and to use a
multimeter really.
Hmm, could probably build a whole pedalboard that way. For next to zero cost. Intriguing.
