Hi all.
It's been interesting to read about everyone's various setups and I noticed
a few people mention that they're using ArtistX.
Is anyone actually using it for video editing? And I don't even mean "pro"
video editing. I'm just wondering about video editing period.
I've been using UbuntuStudio for the past couple of years and the video
editing software that came with it leaves much to be desired.
Just curious if anyone's actually producuctive with anything video and linux
related.

For casual video editing, Kino is pretty sufficient. There is also
Cinelerra, which is a bit higher end.
Also check out Blender, it has non-linear video editing and Jack
support is available in the 3.5 pre-releases. I think Jack transport
is also coming for Blender.
Oh, I forgot, on the commercial side, TVPaint has a beta test version
available for Linux. It's a 2D animation/post-production tool but has
some good video editing and compositing tools and will be one of the
first commercial apps like this for Linux:

blender a few days
ago.

I'll add OpenShot to the list of KDEnlive, Cinelerra, and Kino. ArtistX
comes with a full complement of video authoring/editing software, it all
works, and folks posting in the distros forum indicate it's actually in use.

I've been using Kdenlive to produce DVDs for students, to edit & convert
AVSynthesis videos to more Web-friendly formats, and to edit & produce
experimental videos.

KDenlive looks good but I have bad experiences with all kind of crashes,
destroying projects, vanishing titles and reappearing deleted tracks and
other weird stuff. It seems its very picky with its surrounding,
wouldn't try it under Ubuntu + Gnome.

Hi Malte,
That's exactly what I've been using it under, on Jaunty 9.04. Everyone's
mileage varies, I guess. :)
At this point I'm using SVN 0.7.8.

problems for instance with Pulseaudio to start with.
We really wanted to love Kdenlive but no luck yet. I will check out the

Richard Spindler has done a great job with integrating OME seamelessly
with jack. It really works great, including transport. OME uses to crash
from time to time but not the same as often as kdenlive and it is
lighter. The same as KDEnlive it has a desaster-recovery-mechanism it
simply stores its XML-projectfile contineously - that is: I never lost
more then ~10 seconds of work with any crash of it.
So in a word: if you want to edit video under Linux with an app
integrated in jack OME could be worth the try ;-)

I like OME a lot for smaller projects. The GUI is efficient and intuitive and it's got
all features to make a nice movie. Currently the only issue with it is the lack of
export-format-presets.
For more elaborate projects there's cinelerra (until lumiera is born) and Blender
which offers a 2D video-timeline as well.
And of course there are quite a few alternatives: pitivi, kino, kdenlive,.. A while ago I
started http://linuxfilm.org/start (hosting provided by linuxaudio.org!) - an index of
video-apps for GNU/Linux. It's currently being merged into and migrated to
http://openvideoalliance.org/wiki/
Non-Linear Video Editors (NLE) on GNU/Linux still leave a lot to be desired. However
it's not unheard of to make award winning films for renowned film-festivals on that
platform.

Since no one mentioned it yet, I have to weave a flag for avidemux:
