Pete,
You're not the only one who prefers forums to mailing lists. I agree with
you on "say stuff and read stuff." I also don't care at all for the
archive software that is used, for example, for this mailing list in
comparison to forum software that I have used. It's one more thing that
makes mailing lists look to me like an anachronism.
It's probably true that we're in a minority, but that may be only because
many people that would have joined a forum won't join mailing lists. I
almost didn't join this one, and every week I reconsider that decision,
especially because I'm not that active as a user of other's software
rather than my own.

Yeah, one point in favor of mailing lists that I've seen bandied about
is their superiority for archival purposes. I suppose if you're the
one doing the archiving, this is true, but I have yet to see any forum
software in modern use that sucks half as bad as digging through
mailing lists archives online.

Like it or not, if it's linux and it's audio, the lists are the place

Wow. I wasn't actually aware that there are people who prefer forums
(really). The key thing to me for mailing lists is that you dont have to
think about which bits you last read, they just turn up, in a mail folder,
and you dont accidentally miss an interesting discussion because you
forgot to check the forum website for a week.
My memory is not good enough to remmeber what forum threads and messages I
have read otherwise. Also the time take to compose a typical forum message
is massivly higher than replying to a list - though that way be a point in
forum's favour ;)

I concur... I prefer mailing lists over web forums. I can read email
from anywhere anytime, whether or not I have a web browser available,
and I have better editing tools in an email application, it's easy to
print out messages that I might need to refer to (like a long list of
configuration steps someone posted), and if I perhaps need to forward
information to someone else, it's easy to do in email. In a web forum,
you are pretty much tied to what the web forum's software provides.
