Hi there,
i recently bought a Creative Labs SB Live 24bit 7.1 soundcard (SB0410),
to replace my old SB live player 1024.
i suddenly noted that this card is _NOT_ based on emu10k1 chip, but
on an CA0106-DAT.
The latest alsa CVS has a driver for this chip, but with mplayer,
using the "mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=0 -channels 6 -alang de *.VOB" command
i only get wired sound out of it - but when using oss, i get good
sound, but only
stereo.
i want to know if anyone had success getting this card to work.
i also want to know if this card supports mixing in hardware. ( using
snd_pcm_oss
with multiple oss apps.)

No, this card doesn't do hardware mixing. Everything the emu10k1 does
in hardware, this POS card does in software (the Windows driver that is)
- mixing, DSP, wavetable synth. It's like the sound card version of a
Winmodem.

I've got the SBLive as well, it's not optimal.
Can anyone recomend a cheap card that works well for playback and record
on one or more channels.
I've got a PA setup with the mix going out to my linux box. Eventually
I want to be able to put together demo albums. Just fooling around for
now though.

unfortunatly, this card costs more than twice the money of the live 24bit :(

Well, after all that is the whole motivation for putting everything in
software, less silicon = lower prices = more profit. It kind of makes
sense, as the emu10k1 was originally designed to support HDRs and games
in the Pentium I + Windows 95 era, where computers just weren't fast
enough to do all that in software. But Linux users know how we feel
about Winhardware.

Interesting, it should work. Please post your report to alsa-user at
lists.sourceforge.net. If you don't get a response then file an ALSA
bug report. Almost all ALSA development happens via the bug tracker
these days, so you should get a resolution this way.

The Audigy 2 Value series should work well. You do need a recent ALSA
but the card is emu10k2 based so you get hardware mixing, DSP, wavetable
synth. It's also 24 bit, 192 Khz capable. This is not supported yet in
the Linux driver but should be soon, James Courtier-Dutton is working on
it I think.

How is the noise on an audigy, currently the noise from my SBLive is
pretty noticeable. I noticed creative has a bunch of usb connected
sound card devices- Is there something usable in that line?
