I am sure I am just missing something very elementary but I have turned up all
controls in kmixer and gone through all how-tos and searched in google.
What I really want is to be able to compose and play with something like
MusicEdit. But I don't get anywhere close. Even the simple command:
pmidi -p 16:0 derdurst.mid
plays silently for several minutes. Tell me I am an idiot but tell me what I
am overlooking.

I don't know if this helps but...
Did you connect an external midi-device to your computer? Because midi-port
16 and 20 seem to refer to your read hardware midi-jacks. You might try the
following:
Either take port 17 for playback, if tour audigy is thus supported, it
should play from its internal mini-synth or soundfonts, I don't know. Or try
TiMidity (there's a website at sourceforge.net. TiMidity is a software
Synthesizer. It loads midi-files and plays them using sounds from you
computer.
Third thing you might try: Start up fluidsynth with some Gm-soundfont and
then do an aconnect -ol to find fluidsynth's port and then give pmidi or
aplaymidi this port.
If it all doesn't work, I don't know...

When I said "read" I ment "real". Sorry. Did you try the other way
around:
Record midi with a simple alsa-tool, I believe there's something like
arecordmidi. There's also (g)midimon, and some other console and GUI-based
midi-dumping/viewing utilities. So you can see if input comes from your
external synth. Probably it's something there. Had the same problem once.

parameter. It is more of a converter

Hi Carlyle!
Of course loading the .bnk files doesn't work. They are only text-files, at
least last time I looked.
You can visit hammersound.net for soundfonts, if the site works again. Or
take a look at Dave's page, he listed a few pages for soundfonts and other
sounds:

Besides that try some softsynths (with completely different sounds) or give
TiMidity another try. Which version do you have? Try timidity -h, this should
give the programs help again, there should be something about alsasequencer
devices. I have 2.13, but I think it's been there for a bit longer.
If you don't have any external midi-keyboards, then your card midi I/O (16
and 20) are useless at the moment.

I'm not sure with Audigy but you might have to load your soundfont into the
card. Install awesfx from yast (or your package manager). There you should
have instructions how to fix the problem.
