I like that LA, with all its fractions and diversity, has a central place with this
mailinglist (although I think LAU and LAD could be just one line), and one ruling audio
standard and transport protocol, JACK.
That is only possible because of our open source idelogy and its consequence that it is no
use to create artificial barriers to invent broken Unique Selling Points like
interconnection of a handful of programs. We just get them all.

What rules?
The community: the people on this list, on IRC, all the authors of the
software, helping and teaching each other for no benefit of their own.
An environment as linux audio encourages and motivates people to strive for
their goals.
I don't think I'd be writing software today if it wasn't for the countless
times linux audio members have helped me.
Oh, and playing back some 96k material at 0.666ms latency, no Xruns while
also compiling a kernel. That's pretty wicked too :)

I like several things.
1. Modular setup is interesting for music like ambient. I can channel
things and also work out of the grid. Working out of the grid is difficult
on Windows.
2. Modular setup is good for playing live. I had problems setting up a
system for live performance on Windows that I would be comfortable with.
3. Because sometimes it is challenging to get good results, it gives an
inspiring challenge.
4. I find Linux in general have this aura of research and experiment and
figuring things out. It is also quite inspiring.
5. Not many people know of this software and it makes you feel a little bit
special. What - you are using FL Studio? And I am using Qtractor or Ardour
:)
The general thing I like about Linux is the control I have over my
computing. I am however not very paranoid about it. It is a nice feeling to
have free software and to know that no laws are hanging above you, but I do
not fully agree with Richard Stallman.

Didn't have much to say about what sucks with Linux audio, because in
general I think it just RULES! I'm very thankful to all those who made
professional audio production possible and available on standard
hardware (that's not to say my audio production is anywhere near
"professional" though :-) ).
To be a bit more precise: Licensing rules, as I can either teach myself
to improve any program - or pay someone to do it for me. Not really been
doing neither of those so far, but I appreciate the possibility.
Hardware compatibility rules. So far almost any and all hardware I threw
at my system Just Works. Keyboard with midi through USB, audio through
USB interface, media player, multifunction printer - it all usually
works out of the box.
Multitude of choices rule. I can play back or export to a wide range of
media formats. I can choose between any number of DEs. Don't like Unity?
There's KDE, Gnome and XFCE just to name a few. Don't like Ubuntu?
There's Suse, Arch and Fedora, again to name just a few.
Repositories rule. Thousands of apps and programs just a few clicks
away. One has to be very picky not to find something suitable. And if
you don't, well look again at the licensing point. OK, maybe there
aren't thousands of audio production programs, but I haven't even tried
everything that comes with Ubuntu Studio yet...
Communities rule. Most forums are friendly, fast and helpful. When
documentation is scarce there's other users to help you out.

I like the community and the helpfulness most. If some stereotyping is
allowed, Linux usually attracts enthusiastic technically capable users,
which is very good. Most people are really helpful, and there's just a big
satisfactory difference to be able to interact with whoever made the
application you're using. I'm also pretty fond of trying to solve technical
issues despite my lack of programmer background.
Now, this stuff works for ME. I've managed to set myself up with a workflow
that's working for my purposes. However, other people might be less
inclined to deal with the technical stuff, and just want to fairly easily
be able to make some music on a open source and free platform. I hope that
some day we can cater to them too. I do however mostly think this lies on
us users who're active in the community. It's not so much that certain
tools aren't around, or are unusable (exception possibly being something
like Ableton), I think it's mostly a lack of documentation and tutorials
that's the issue. And that documentation/tutorials needs to be done by
users, from a user perspective, and not a developer perspective. We just
need to show users what can be done, and give them the general tools and
skills to just get going and doing what they want. It's not like
windows/mac-musical software is incredibly intuitive, the reason it's
generally more accessible is the fact that so many people use it and put up
tutorials.

If you're a musician trying to learn Ableton or ProTools or SONAR -
chances are you know another musician who already knows how to use it.
So you can learn from them. Not so easy to find people that already know
Ardour, JACK, Zyn/Yoshimi, LinuxSampler, sooperlooper, etc.
Non-face-to-face learning resources (online in video or wiki or forum
formats) only go so far. Although at my office we've been able to use
chat clients effectively for office software and enterprise apps.

Ummm, and if you come across a bug, which distro to you report it to?

I can make a new workflow no one ever thought of before. I can use linux
audio tools for completely new applications. As far as I know Linux is the
only OS that has the tools for multitack recording from a terminal. In
fact the CLI audio tools are one of the biggest pluses.

The possibility to fiddle with things and do stuff which has not been
done before. (Or at least which *I* haven't done before :p)
I love it when people kind of disregard how things "should be done" and
create their own UIs, workflows, whatever... Recently found "din",

In my experience, vendors of both open and proprietary programs in Linux have
big ears. I've been coming up with suggestions and wishes to diverse projects
as Hydrogen, Mixbus, Linuxsampler, Pianoteq, LinuxDSP and (Loomer) Aspect.
Everyone has been listening and tried to implement (if it makes sense) the
suggestions with great attitude. Sometimes the suggestions has been ready
before I have contacted them but anyway - I like that this people are trying
to improve their stuff as much as possible.
Another good experience for me are the big, friendly LAU and LAD communities.
Trough the years, I have been asking stupid questions in LA* and can't
remember that someone has been rude or an asshole one single time.
And the world of Linux audio would never be the same without the many heroes
that makes libraries, plugins and programs - often for free - LAD: You rules!

Here are my top 3:
1.) Modularity
As a user, I can assemble applications in all sorts of different ways,
thanks to JACK.
As a developer, I can rely on building blocks created by other
developers. Excellent libraries like libsndfile, libsamplerate,
PortAudio, JACK, Lilv, Suil, and RtMidi make developing Linux audio
applications much, much easier.
2.) Low latency audio and low jitter MIDI
I can compose music for hours with 1.33 milliseconds of internal
latency without xruns.
I use external synths to create most of my music, so low-jitter MIDI
is an absolute requirement. With Linux, I get peak MIDI jitter around
1.5 milliseconds, which is phenomenal for a USB2 MIDI device sending
MIDI to four synthesizers. I don't think there's a better USB MIDI
driver on any other operating system.
JACK, ALSA, and a realtime kernel make this possible.
3.) Open source
If I find a bug in an application I'm working with or a library I'm
linking to, I don't have to wait around for a developer to fix the
problem. I can fix it myself, and send the fix to the developer.
