I'm not bothered by that though, it works well enough for youtube. I have a
real sound interface for serious work. I have done interesting measurements
with the card though. Like getting more noise on the inputs with mixer
levels at 0 than with raising the mixer levels just a bit above it. That and
the AD unit totally misbehaving when running in 192kHz.

What driver parameters did you use? (and where did you put them :-)) Just
as I don't quite have the money for a soundcard at the moment.

I'll be in the market for a better laptop later this year, and I need
some specific features.
I'd like to purchase a machine strong enough to handle my work with the
AVSynthesis software. My desktop boxes include 2.0 and 2.4 GHz CPUs,
with 3 and 2 GB memory, and they are not powerful enough for some of the
combined OpenGL/Csound realtime processing. I'll need a machine with a
very fast CPU (preferably 64-bit), large HD support, large RAM capacity,
and accelerated 3D-capable graphics. The on-board sound will be replaced
by an external device, preferably *not* a USB audio device. I want very
high-quality audio, and eventually I'll need support for multichannel
output. The display doesn't have to be humongous, just very clear.
At this time price is no object, because I don't have the money for it
now anyway. :) But I'm interested in the range of makers and prices
that might appear for such a machine. So, what suggestions from the
LAUyers ?

Hi Dave,
Do a search for ADK laptops. They're pro audio laptops that aren't sold too
expensively. Why I like them is because you have the option of buying the
computer without an OS and saving 100 bucks. You also get all the computer
sound attenuation included.
The standard for laptop and audio seems to be Intel's Core 2 Duo.
I'm considering buying one of the 14" laptops and triple booting XP, OS x
(hackintosh style) and Ubuntu (or debian, haven't decided).

Make sure you buy from a vendor with a good return policy, in case you
get one that can't do realtime due to SMM issues. It's almost
impossible to rule this out ahead of time.

Could a barebone laptop be a solution?
If you go to http://www.intel.com/go/VerifiedByIntel/, you will
find a link to

which presents the barebones Intel has "verified".
To get more info from them you have to be accepted as a partner, it
seems.
I have not found any notebook barebones for AMD.
The good points are:
. the cpu is pin-mounted, i.e. you can choose your own and upgrade
the cpu (amd notebooks all has pins/socketed, not soldered, from what
I have found out)
. you can choose any socket P processor, the fastest I can order from my
distributer is currently Intel Core2duo T9300 2.5GHz 800/6M
. any sata (normal length) 2.5" disk you like
. your choise of memory size (up to 4GB)
. an optional mini-pci-express, mostly wifi-lan cards
. no os included
. firewire (4-pin), usb
The bad parts:
. pc-card-express, sorry no pc-card
. the one I got came without any documentation whatsoever and none to
be found on the net
. the infamous hd-intel soundchip
. you will probably need close-source drivers for the 3D graphics
I am testing an Asus one (AS96SP965PM2) for the moment which I might
resell for 4160SEK+vat (that would be something like 250USD). To make
a working notebook you have to add cpu, disk, memory, and software.
Also check whether keyboard, batteries and power adapter is included.
Perhaps you can find a reseller in your area for such a ting.
I am currently trying to find out which (Linux) drivers which works on
this one.

I have not found any notebook barebones for AMD.
ive got one. they cant be that rare.. as AMD has long been preferred by many who build pcs
on top of barebones platforms
id look up Clevo, Compal, Asus, and MSI
ive got a MSI AMD 12", 64bit single-core, from fall 2005
just about every cable in it that could possible broke, has
eg the screen dims out, had to pilfer wireless antennae from a Dell (which used 10x better
cabling and connectors to begin with), replace the power adaptor cord (which shorted out
internally and created some nice acrid smoke), plug in an external kbd as the internal one
touches the case below shorting it out and either powering off the machine or sending
'rogue' characters, and get a pcmcia soundcard since the internal one lost its
left channel after bumping into the plug lightly while headphones were connected (ive
since dropped/bumped the Indigo's port with much higher tension, and its still fine,
seems to be shock-mounted or has really flexible spring-metal or something..
but yeah, it still works. my thinkpad died sooner, but it was an A series that they no
longer make, and had an entirely plastic chassis..

Yes, I got no doc. for the one I ordered, so I had to figure out
how to mount the keyboard and it will be interesting to see if I
connected the three cables to the wifi-card right or not...
So to sell theese I have to figure out everything and make my own
manuals to my customers.

The above one have a SATA HD and an PATA CD. Both are seen and
reported by the BIOS. I wounder if I could boot from the SD-adapter in
the computers front.
I just got the modem to work. Next thing is to make resume from a
X-session, and suspend to ram (text mode suspend to disk/resumer works
fine).
Do you know how to access the BIOS, there seem to be no key-combinations
to get into the bios-setup at boot.
