Dear All,
Does anybody use M-Audio Keystation 88?
Does it transmit MIDI "Active Sensing" message?
I have one and it does not seem to transmit "Active Sensing" at all.
Do you think it is a design feature, or a technical fault of the unit?

Robert - we went over this on IRC.
Contrary to you apparent pre-existing belief, *most* MIDI equipment does
NOT send active sense messages. I don't know what you're trying to
accomplish (you said you planned to write your own software), but if it is
based around the idea that MIDI gear sends active sense messages when
connected, it isn't going to work in the general case.

How interesting!
Let me explain, what I wish to accomplish.
All my previous keyboards and MIDI equipment use Active Sensing.
Keystation does not.
It does not even use running protocol.
In example, when I play a C-major chord, I would normally expect a
keyboard to send this: 144 60 100 64 100 67 100
Keystation sends this instead: 144 60 100 144 64 100 144 67 100
(of course assuming the velocity was 100)
So, the bottom line is: Keystation "speaks strange".
The manual does not even include MIDI Implementation Chart, so there is
no document to consult with.
I like Keystation very very much.
It just "speaks strange".
Otherwise it is great and feels good.
I was just wondering if there is anyone else, who has Keystation and can
observe the same MIDI communication (because there are no documents to
double-check).

strange to you but not to me :)
In days of MIDI over USB, always sending normalized messages does make
sense, doesn't it? No need to keep track of the status byte.
Running status was clever hack to maximize throughput in the 32kbaud days.

PS. If you use jack, jack-midi requires all messages to be normalized.
(so that they can be muxed when combining events from different ports)
jack midi backend parse the stream and normalize messages.

How does the OP monitor the MIDI messages? Assumed the OP is using ALSA
MIDI to monitor the MIDI messages, aren't the messages then already
worked off? IOW isn't active sensing removed, even if the keyboard
should sent it and isn't running status converted to messages that
always provide the status byte?

ALSA does not remove active sensing messages -- it's the receiving
device/application that must handle them.

Sequencer message indeed do not use status bytes.
So somebody observing running status obviously is using the RawMIDI
interface.

On page 22 there at least is the wanted information about active
sensing. It is transmitted.
