Hello, I'm trying to find out if plugging my USB soundcard in different
USB ports of my laptop makes any difference. If I got it right, I should
choose the one with the lowest IRQ. So, with "lspci -v" I can see I
have 4 "USB Controller" devices, each with their own IRQ (lowest one is
16 which seems to be shared by video card...) - but how do I know which
one my sound card is plugged into?
The problem is lspci reports busses in the form "00:1d.0" while lsusb
in the form "Bus 001 Device 002" - and plugging my soundcard in another
port changes only the Device of lsusb, not the Bus... so I'm pretty
much lost.

To see which bus belongs to which PCI device, run:
ls -l /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb*

In /sys/devices/pciXXXXX, try:
for i in `find|grep usb|grep product`; do echo $i; cat $i; done
I only have /sys/devices/pci0000:00 here.
It gives the name of the product, maybe it can help.
Try other files too. For my usb key, I see:
/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb1/1-3> ls
1-3:1.0 bDeviceSubClass configuration idProduct remove

it's allways seen on the 1d.7 controller, which seems to be the only USB2 and of
course the one with the highest IRQ. However, when I try plugging in a USB bluetooth
dongle in different physical ports, it's seen on different Controllers by dmesg. So
with
the dongle I have actually found which physical port is the 1d.3, which is the one
with the lowest IRQ, but when I attach the soundcard to it dmesg reports
it on 1d.7. How's that possible?
BTW is it possible to reassign IRQ somehow on a laptop? As I said previously
the IRQ 16 seems to be shared by the video card, and I read that's not good.

I see that 00:1d.7 is USB2. The others are USB. The kernel seems to pick
up the fastest controller for the soundcard.
Maybe you can plug things in the USB ports, see which one goes where
and when only the 1d.3 is free you plug the soundcard.
Hackish, but may work. (Or not.)
There are surely ways to force the kernel to use this or that USB
controller for one given device, but I don't know how, sorry...
maybe with some udev configuration stuff if you use that beast?

UHCI/OHCI: USB 1.x only
EHCI: USB 2.0 only
xHCI: USB 1.x-3.0
(When Intel built the first EHCI controller chip, they intended for
it to support all speeds, but the USB 1.x part was too buggy, so they
dropped that part and added a separate UHCI controller and a switching
mechanism instead.)

No.
As I said previously the IRQ 16 seems to be shared by
the video card,
and I read that's not good.
Interrupt sharing is a problem only when there are bad drivers that have
interrupt handlers that take too long.
In most cases this is not a problem because the only drivers known to
have this problem are those for USB and the closed-source ones for GPUs.
