I have a small project that I'm recording for a friend and this is my
first use of hopefully several projects using ardour as my DAW.
(BTW, these are not paying gigs, just low-risk projects.) I'm having
some mixdown problems I need help with. I haven't been very good
about keeping up with releases. For this project I'm on 0.9beta3,
but I will upgrade to 0.9beta6 before this weekend for the next
project.
Anyway, I can't figure out how to mixdown tracks with effects. I'm
using a single-band PEQ and plate reverb in the pre-fader column for
each track and using the outputs of each track as the inputs of the
stereo track that eventually goes to disk, but for some reason the
stereo track is recorded dry. If I solo it, the mix is dry. If I
listen only to the mix of the individual tracks, it's wet.
So here's my questions:
1. Is it possible (and how) to bounce a wet mix to a stereo track
that will be exported to a .wav file?
2. Is there currently any way, or are there plans to add support for
exporting an entire mix to disk instead of bouncing to a stereo track
to be exported? (Of course you can do that now, but it's a dry mix.)
I guess I'm asking for a non-realtime mixdown feature.
3. Somewhat related, is it possible to delete or undo automations?

You need to enable "Run plugins while recording" in the Options
Editor/Misc tab.

Yes, there are plans to do a proper non-realtime mixdown, once
JACK supports it (soon). This will be in before Ardour 1.0.

Do you mean delete automation lines and points? Yes to both.
To delete the entire automation, click on the "a" button in the
track button bar and select one of the Clear choices. To remove
a single automation control point, go into "auto" mouse mode,
then Shift-Right click on a point will remove it.

Create a stereo bus and connect your audio tracks to it. Use this bus
to apply stereo effects, like freeverb and SC4 (a good stereo
compressor). Connect the bus outputs to the appropriate playback
channels so you can hear what you're getting. Then, create two more
audio tracks, Mix_L and Mix_R. Connect the left and right bus outputs
to them, and use them to record the (wet) mix. Then, export those two
tracks to a stereo WAV file.
When I first started using this scheme, ardour could not export a
stereo track to a WAV file. It probably can now, and that would be
more natural than the Mix_L, Mix_R solution described above. You may
want to experiment a bit.
This may sound complicated, but it's actually pretty easy.

jack client. For example; jack graph with ardour,
rezound and jamin. Ardour stereo bus to Rezound
(destructive editing) and then Rezound to JAMin. Or
Ardour stereo bus to JAMin (master with multitrack
source) and then JAMin output to Rezound or back into
Ardour.
There's many routing possibilities. Jackd rules!
