Anyone else had problems installing Mandrake 9.1, like the installer not being
able to see the CD-ROM it was just loaded into memory from, with lots of
DriveReady SeekComplete errors in the console? I've seen this on one machine,
but not another.
Does anyone know if the 9.1 multimedia kernel includes this patch?

I wish Mandrake hadn't shipped with a pre-release kernel.

Bit off topic, but I went through 6 CDRom drives before I found
one that
would install Mandrake 9.1.
The Text-based install also didn't work.
Are you sure you want 9.1?
I've upgraded, and it's noticeably slower than 9.0 was.
Sorry, I don't know about the patch.
If I don't have an alsa supported soundcard in my laptop, does that mean
that I can't use jack?

9.0 seemed to be quite good.

its not slow here. Perhaps there is something wrong. No 3d
graphics or something like that?

That's not a bad idea - thanks.
mandrake is permanent beta.
I'd agree it favours features over stability. By the time the problems are
ironed out, out comes a new version!
btw, big thanks to Thac for his rpms.
He (?) has done a great job of packaging audio applications for Mandrake,
better than Mandrakesoft itself.

I went through 6 CDRom drives before I found one that
would install Mandrake 9.1.
I've also noticed this, especially with the older CD-ROMs. They all work after
install though.

I've upgraded, and it's noticeably slower than 9.0 was.
9.0 doesn't support the Intel motherboard chipset on this board properly - I
get a PCI conflict message on boot and all hdparm options are set to the
slowest. Have you checked your hdparm settings?
I'd also like to try the 9.1 multimedia kernel.
In any case, I'll probably have to upgrade alsa, because for some reason they
have stuck with an rc version.

Turns out a change of CD-ROM drive did the trick with the Mandrake 9.1
install. I don't know why, because this Creative drive is a standard
one which has worked perfectly with Linux in the past. Both the
working drive (Mitsumi CDRW) and the non working (Creative CDROM) are
about 1999 vintage.
I suspected it could be related to the use of 700MB .iso images, but
Mandrake has dropped those - disc one appears to be 651MB. Perhaps it
was burned on 700MB media, and drives more than a couple of years old
don't always support that properly.

RPMS of alsa 0.9.2 are on Mandrake Cooker

I could find alsa-utils, but not libalsa2, libalsa2-devel,
libalsa-data or alsa-tools. Which mirror did you get these from? Did
you need anything else to upgrade ALSA from the version in Mandrake
9.1?

Of course you also need the source of the kernel you are using. For the
multimedia kernel just install the kernel-multimedia-source package at
Thac's RPMS.

Found them!
The version number had been bumped up from:
libalsa2-0.9.2-3mdk.i586.rpm
to:
libalsa2-0.9.2-4mdk.i586.rpm
The Mandrake Club rpmfind and mirror find scripts still linked to the
older package, so I got 'file not found' yesterday.
There doesn't appear to be an RPM maintained of alsa-tools - I don't
know why, because Mandrake packages all the other ALSA stuff. I built
envy24control from source and it looks OK so far. A very elegant
looking application.

I'd never needed to upgrade ALSA RPM's between distribution upgrades
before, so I didn't know that. It's a bit unusual to require source
in order to upgrade a binary, isn't it?

Hi,
I'm quite new to Linux but AFAIK the modules are located in the kernel
source tree and that is I think the only reason you need the kernel source.
