Hi folks,
I am trying to make my 2 year old laptop fit for live-usage. Currently I am
stuck at the 50ms latency border...
I am using kernel 2.6.3-gentoo-r1, have preemption enabled and run jackd and
every accessing app as root. I spent a day tuning my hd but there is no speed
improvment so far.
When I try to run jackd with less than 50ms latency sound is garbled and
broken...
I am using the builtin maestro3 for audio and an Edirol UM-2 for MIDI.
Which other things did I miss? Where is room for speed improvements?

I think thats your problem. I cant get the maestro3 in my dell i8100 to go
faster than 2x2048 without xruns. Funnily enough I also use a UM2, but
that doesnt cause me any pain :)

I think thats your problem. I cant get the maestro3 in my dell i8100 to go
faster than 2x2048 without xruns. Funnily enough I also use a UM2, but
that doesnt cause me any pain :)

If possible, take your laptop to your dealer and test. You can set up
ALSA's module conf in advance, so you won't need to configure anything
in the shop. I'm recommending this, because I my tests I've found,
that the pairing of USB sound device, laptop hardware and low
latency/Jack is very sensitive. As you already have a midi device, you
can use a USB soundcard without Midi (most don't have midi anyways).
Some inexpensive devices I'd recommend to check out include the
similar looking Terratec Aureon USB, Audiotrak USB EX, 7.1 EX or 44.
The cheapest solution would be the Audiotrak Optoplay, which is well
supported, but a bit minimalistic (no recording).
Make sure you do run jackd over USB with 48 kHz, too.

Ha, Thomann. They are quite correct. A year ago I ordered the Edirol
UA-20 there, which wasn't supported by ALSA at that time, but I needed
it working for LADConf1. No problem sending the device back and buying
another one (the infamous Quattro: "Finger weg!") The debug info I
collected in the short time I had the UA-20 probably played a role in
getting it working in the end. So in a way, Thomann does even support
Linux... ;)

This will be hard to achieve reliably with USB audio anyways. BTW: The
current c't magazine has a test of USB audio devices, Linux test info
provided by yours truly anonymously.

Wow...Finally something I have experience with! :)
I am using the Maestro 3 chip on a Dell CPXj 650 w /256 MB Ram. I can
run Jack under "su root" at 2 x 1024 without but a few Xruns. I'm
running MDK 9.2 with Thacs MM Kernel. I had problems at first mainly
because I had an identical laptop that only had 128 MB of memory. This
mostly caused the machine to slow under X and use more CPU.
Items suggested to me were setting /tmp as a ram fs for Jack. I think
this helped a little. Also shutting of all unnesesary daemons and
services like apm, apci, etc. I getting what I estimate to be about 10ms
latency. No problem for the live application I'm using it for which is
fx processing on a PA for vocals and acoustic guitar. I was using Ardour
as the LADSPA host (major underusage of Ardour!) but now I started
experimenting with Alsa Mod synth so I can try using midi control over
the effects.
