Hi,
Another Asterisk PBX related question. I have the Asterisk service
periodically sending System commands on the host machine when particular
phone extensions are called. The Asterisk service is run by the user
asterisk. I made asterisk a member of the 'audio' group so that it can
use 'aplay' with the System command. eg.
System(aplay -c 1 -D pulse /home/iain/sounds/line1.wav)
This plays OK but plays on the laptop's internal hardware rather via
PulseAudio. Jack is running and is configured to use an external USB
sound card and the PulseAudio Jack Sink.
If I run the following as user iain, it plays correctly through the USB:
aplay -c 1 -D pulse /home/iain/sounds/line1.wav
However via the Aterisk service, or by running the command in a console
as asterisk, it plays through the internal speakers. eg.
sudo -H -u asterisk bash -c 'aplay -c 1 -D pulse
/home/iain/sounds/line1.wav'
I don't know if the "-D pulse" option is necessary, I'm trying lots of
things...
As well as the audio group, I've tried adding asterisk to the pulse and
pulse-access groups, but it doesn't help (and yes, I logged out and in
again).
If i run the last code given above with aplay in verbose mode (-vvv), it
throws the error:
xcb_connection_has_error() returned true
But this Is not error because adding "unset DISPLAY ; " to the start of
the command removes the error but it continues to play through the
external speakers. Here is the print for the command:

I suppose a likely cause for the problem is that the asterisk user has
no ~.config/pulse directory. How can I get around that?

used aplay from your user account it would have played through a pulse
instance running as your user, the asterisk user account would not have
access to that instance. You need to start pulse as user asterisk.

Start PulseAudio if it is not running yet. This is different from
starting PulseAudio without --start which would fail if PA is
already
running. PulseAudio is guaranteed to be fully initialized when

Daemonize after startup, i.e. detach from the terminal. Note that
when running as a systemd service you should use

Thanks Chris. I've tried running:
sudo -H -u asterisk bash -c 'unset DISPLAY ; /usr/bin/pulseaudio -vvvvv
--daemonize=no --start'
and after killing off the pulseaudio process:
sudo -H -u asterisk bash -c 'unset DISPLAY ; /usr/bin/pulseaudio -vvvvv
--daemonize=yes --start'
But neither get the audio working correctly. The verbose output of the
instances are as follows:
D: [pulseaudio] conf-parser.c: Parsing configuration file
'/etc/pulse/client.conf'
D: [pulseaudio] conf-parser.c: /etc/pulse/client.conf.d does not exist,
ignoring.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup successful.
If i kill off pulseaudio with 'pulseaudio -k" as user iain and start
pulsaudio in the same way (rather than having it start automatically
when using aplay), the output is the same and the audio continues to
work correctly.
I'm still not sure if /var/lib/asterisk/.config/pulse is being used

two users is going to be a problem. Jack has to run as user and is not
system. pulse can be run as a system daemon but I don't know what that
does to a pulse->jack bridge.
Simple solution: use wires. Run the output of the onboard audio to a spare
input on the usb device and run a spare output on the usb device to the
onboard input.
Less simple: use networking. both pulse and jack are able to stream audio
over the network (local host is fine) so run two instances of either jack
or pulse and use networking to join them. I do not know pulse well
enough to give any hints what so ever on network streaming. Jack would be
easier. Just use netjack or zita-njbridge.
Also, ALSA has mixer plugins that may provide an extra phseudo device. I
don't know how that works.
Contrary to popular thought, pulse does not require a display, but it does
require access to a user dbus. Using dbuslaunch to run a screen session
works for this. (at least this has worked for me on a headless system)

Ha! Very clever, I would never have thought of this! :-) And I may just
end up doing it (actually i already found the right lead and did). The
sound out of this laptop is pretty bad and it's only a mini-jack out,
but I only need to send a voice synthesiser through to the main
speakers, so it will do at a pinch. Just the risk that the plug pulls
out or gets noisy or something like that.

Interesting, I'll look into to this. So you think the problem exists
between PulseAudio on the Asterisk side communicating with jack on my
user's side? Makes sense.

And this is looking like a great solution. Using cat and netcat, I
changed the system call by Asterisk to:
System(cat /home/iain/sounds/chamada8.wav | nc 127.0.0.1 9876)
And it's picked up by the user iain listening on port 9876 with a script:

trap "exit" INT
while :
do
nc -l 9876 | aplay -
sleep 0.2
done
exit 0
Need to test it more but it seems to be working well. Thanks again!
