Hi, I've just migrated my studio over to Linux (whoohoo!) from
Windows/Finale/Cakewalk and need some more details on synchronization
between applications, specifically Ardour and Rosegarden4. The Ardour
manual is a little sparse in this area.
Specifically, I am using Rosegarden to control a MIDI keyboard and a
MIDI drum machine which route their audio outputs into an external mixer
and then back into the DAW hardware (Audiophile 2496). Works great, of
course, with much less fuss than Finale or Cakewalk. My drums are
broken up into multiple tracks (one for kick drum, one for snare, etc),
so I can mix them separately as needed (the way you would with a real
drum kit). So I need to capture the audio coming into Ardour (will have
to record each track individually), which is easy enough to do, but I
need to make sure each track stays in synch with the other drum tracks
or I will have a bloody mess. The version of Cakewalk I used didn't
have SMPTE support, but I assume I will have to use something along
those lines.
Any online documentation to look at? I couldn't find any... if there is
also some kind of auto-sync so when the MIDI playback starts in
Rosegarden, Ardour will automatically start recording the incoming audio
would be useful also.

Sounds like you need JACK transport support. Look for a menu for
"JACK transport mode" in Rosegarden's sequencer configuration page,
and set that to "Sync"; and in Ardour's Sync options page set the
"Sync Source" to "JACK". Then it should just do what you want.
One caveat: last time I tried this, I set things up as above, armed
record in Ardour, hit Play in Rosegarden, and although Ardour did
start up, it just played; it didn't record at all. I only managed to
get Ardour to record by also starting the transport from within
Ardour. That was not an especially new version of Ardour -- I should
check what current versions do -- or maybe someone with a better
acquaintance with Ardour can fill this bit in quicker than I can.

Ardour can send MTC. It's working in the elementary stages to sync my
Linux DAW to the MIDI sequencer (an old Powermac running Logic 4). I
haven't done any serious recording with it yet, just got it to start and
stop when I say.

That's basically what I need. The Rosegarden -> Ardour sync doesn't
seem to be working (as Chris said it might). Ardour starts doing
something, but nothing gets recorded.

Ardour is not a good transport "slave" yet. You must start/stop the
transport from ardour at this time. If this is what you are doing,
and it still doesn't record anything, please post a bugreport

Rosegarden will work as the slave (including for recording) when using
JACK transport. It won't slave using MMC, although there is some
basic MMC master support that I've never tried to use myself.
As James Stone pointed out, you may need a newer version of Rosegarden
to get JACK transport support -- it appeared in 0.9.7, and the
current version is 0.9.8.

Part of Paul's methodology includes access to a Mackie
8bus where he can test traditional sync solutions and

I'm getting pretty excited about it because I think
it's going to happen soon. :)
