I've been tinkering recently with my Eee running Xubuntu and a newly
acquired M-Audio Axiom 49 USB Midi Keyboard; I think it'd be just about as
great as it could get if I could use the Eee as a synth engine via
XynAddSubFX or similar - Unfortunately, I've been unable to tweak my JACK
settings to the point that all stutters and chops have been eliminated. I
understand that the Eee specs are quite low (900mhz proc, 512MB RAM), but
watching my resource usage while I'm playing shows the processor at less
than 50% and RAM holding steady at 60% or so - This would lead me to believe
that my problem is configuration related.
Any other Eee users out there had any luck getting JACK fine tuned to the
Eee? Since we're all working on nearly identical hardware, perhaps we could
swap configs?

Have you tried another synth? AFAIK ZynAddSubFX isn't realtime safe, and
hence doesn't make a good test candidate.

Hi,
I don't know if you followed the earlier thread I started but I got an eee
too and I'm trying to dig it's audio capabilities. So far I've noticed a lot
of program have slight glitches, amarok being the only one running
flawlessly. I'm currently writing an alsa driver for my app to see if it's
going to make it any better.
How did you install jack BTW ? Did you recompile the source ? Is there any
kernel work involved or was it just a matter of installing packages ? .. I'm
pretty new to all this so bear with me if this is all noob stuff.
Keep me up to date with your progress.

Just as a side note, other people are exploring eee and found glitches
under xandros. Apparently xubuntu is much more stable audio wise. I've
installed it and indeed vlc & others don't drop out anymore...

You probably want a realtime kernel and maybe something like a DSSI synth -
they tend to be fairly lightweight and should be rt-safe.
Hm, wonder where you'd find one of those... ;-)

What this appears to show is that the EEE is roughly equivalent to a
powerbook G4 1.67 GHz, for this particular benchmark. And almost half
the speed of an intel macbook pro 1.84. That's not bad considering
the G4 *still* costs more on ebay than the EEE does new.
There's also a test of the number of synth voices at which the EEE and
the macbook pro each reach 66% CPU. If I read it right, the MBP can
do 800 voices (3200 ugens). The EEE can do 356 (1424 ugens).

I am very interested in this gadget. I played with one in a store
today. Tiny!
The main things holding me back are:
1) the keyboard would take a LOT of getting used to - it's soooo
small!
2) the display model in the store had a glitchy, intermittent trackpad
button. I'm sure it took a lot of abuse in the past month or so it's
been there, but that's still not encouraging.
3) Does ALSA support USB 2.0 devices yet? (There's no firewire port,
so BeBob is irrelevant). I'd like to get decent (well under 10 ms)
latency at 2 channels in/out for use in live performances, and
possibly higher channel count at higher latency for use as an
ultraportable Ardour box :-) Something like the M-audio Fast Track
Ultra would be nice - iff it works with alsa! But I'd need MIDI too
to hook up foot controllers. The Edirol FA66 would be perfect - but
it's firewire.
What are my options? Anything? :-(

That's really cute. But the site is kind of a non-site.
I had to go to the (ugh) myspace page and watch a video
to figure out that it runs jack, hydrogen, ardour, et al.
Anyway, thanks but no thanks. I might be interested in that someday,
but I need something laptop-ish first and audio-oriented second.

That is actually not an issue. I thought it would be but once it sits on you
lap it's very confi and the keys are quite good. The only 'issue' is that
going back to a regular desktop/laptop makes you feek you're in front of a
boat :)

I didn't have any real issue with the trackpad itself. Mind you I am a
person that loves to use keyboard shortcuts and tabbing between apps so I
might be biases there. The only thing I do not like however is the mouse.

I said, I'm not using it too much so it's not a bug deal either

Yes it does. I did Audacious -> Tapco usb interface -> Active Monitor and
had zero problem. Sounded nice & clear.

The size you can get used to. Some of the keys can be a little
temperamental though.. You have to hit them square on or they do not
register.

It could be that you did not realise the trackpad button is actuallly
2 buttons fused to look like 1 button, so if you hit it in the centre
it often does not work. Press on the left side for left click, right
side for right click (this is written on my eeepc by the way. So far
the only audio apps I have used are aldrin and milkytracker which both
work fine, albeit a little slow).
