Unfa on youtube used to make quarterly news videos which I found gave a nice overview but he stopped doing that for whichver reason. I think what he based it on still exists: https://libreav.org/article/quarterly-release-pact Hope that helps a bit. Regards, Philipp

Pipewire is a BIG new addition. I was very excited to see I could use two audio interfaces at the same time and route them wherever I want with qjackctl! :) However There have been some cool new audio plugins too. For instance, Vitalium is an awesome synth that I've heard is comparable to MASSIVE (I've never tried massive though). I've played around a little bit in Vitalium and it is feature-rich. I've gotten some new plugins from the Arch pro-audio group. For instance, there are a couple of plugins I have not tried yet: EasySSP StereoSourceSeparation Artican's TheFunction and ThePilgrim Creative Intent's Temper They have nice looking guis, but I haven't heard them yet. There is also a new way to load Window's vsts: yabridge. It's been getting a lot of attention on the Linux_Audio subreddit, but this is another thing I haven't tried yet as I tend to use linvst for Windows vsts, and I don't use very many. Let me know if I missed anything. The Linux kernel itself is also always exciting because new audio hardware tends to "just work". Another important development, for me at least, is that we now finally have a good selection of libraries, which enable the use of the SFZ format by plugins and other sample player software: sfizz, liquidsfz, linusampler, calfbox, et al. and most of them have good support for new SFZ features. The situation just a few years ago was very different. And, though not strictly Linux or FLOSS-related, let's not forget http://sfzformat.com/, which is an amazing effort. Chris

Hey Christoph, On my current main computer I actually still run pulse + jack. I have a netbook I use for fun to run pipewire on for testing. The reason I haven't switched is because I need to be able to produce things quickly for work and I have a little anxiety about pipewire being slightly different. I like to lock the sampling rate when I'm doing pro audio work, and I worry that I can't do the same in pipewire yet. However, being able to use multiple sound cards at the same time is probably going to eventually bring me over to using pipewire for everything (and the video stuff too!). I have a build of creative Intent's Temper on my machine from the Arch repos, so there is a build of it on Linux already. Do you think it would work if I sent it to you? I could also find the pkgbuild and you could use that to build it yourself if you're interested. Brandon Hale

You can do that right now (alsa_in/out or zita-ajbridge) but it will move you into the realm of clocks drift. It might not matter that much depending on your use case but you said "sampling rate when I'm doing pro audio work". It might not be that pro audio anymore. I have not tested pipewire but I can't imagine that pipewire and multiple cards would be any better in that respect.

There's more to pipewire than that. It's a different audio model, so I would say it probably does work better to use multiple interfaces. It's worked better for me in pipewire than with alsa_in/out at least. I've tried alsa_in/out, but it is a delicate process. There are more benefits than the one I gave (like unified video support), but that was the one feature that really blew me away. Not sure Pipewire is needed for using multiple interfaces. My employer uses VMware's Horizon Client. I have two audio devices - a USB headset and a separate Behringer USB card.
