Hi,
Since some time I can't build the vanilla kernel when patching it with
Ingo Molnar's realtime patch.
Any idea what is going wrong?

Disable Comedi drivers? I'm not sure, but seems that Comedi drivers are
designed to work with RTAI real-time, so their implementation may be
conflicting with -rt kernel (just guessing...). Try to report this to
Comedi developers or to Ingo.

There is linux-image-2.6.28-3-rt in Ubuntu (universe), but I don't use
those packages so can't say how good are...

Thank you! I messed around with the code for a while, things got more
and more involved and finally I thought it is a better strategy to just
ask the list :) (...which worked: I finally could compile the kernel :)
after disabling two drivers - both in the 'staging' directory, which,
following the advice of Jörn Nettingsmeier, rather should be disabled
anyway...)
So for the moment I am happy and probably better do not touch my kernel
again :)
Maybe it would be a good idea to let the authors of the driver know?
Not sure - I am just a dilettantish user :)

So I now have a running realtime kernel - but unfortunately the glitches
remain...
I wonder if there is some tool which allows to trace them down to some
application / driver / ... ?

Yeah, one of my systems periodically crashes with the -rt kernel even
with no realtime processes running and I'm still struggling to find
where the problem is, so unfortunately the glitches of the -rt kernel
are common. If the failure is at run time, it is usually harder to find
the problem, probably the best "tool" to fix those bugs is to send a
detailed report to the developers :P

with no realtime processes running and I'm still struggling to find
where the problem is, so unfortunately the glitches of the -rt kernel
are common. If the failure is at run time, it is usually harder to find

in staging is needed (or should even be considered) for serious kernels.
why it's built by default in your setup is beyond me (never happened to
me), but i'm pretty sure you pressed some big red button during kernel
configuraton... it was probably even labelled "don't press this button
again".

I have to admit that - beyond having the wish to get rid of all these
ugly glitches when using sound applications - I don't have the time to
get deeper involved into the kernel...
My strategy is to get the configuration of the newest debian kernel, to
use it as a template for the vanilla kernel and to hit [enter] for all
new configuration options in a big and naive confidence that the default
values make sense :) Bad, I know, but I really don't have the time to
study and read about all these options...
Some day I plan to finally work through all those kernel books I already
bought, some day...
That's why I think it would be great for people like me to have the
option to just install a realtime kernel from the (in my case debian)
repository at the place of misusing the time of people like you who
could make better use of it for development with the goal to finally
make linux work with audio out of the box...
Unfortunately it seems that people like you - doing linux and music -
are an exception and that most linux guys don't see any sense in making
linux a multi-media operating system. A big fault as I think, as most
people (at least in Japan) use their computer to play around with film,
photo and music and not for hacking servers like me :)
Of course I could switch (from debian sid) to ubuntu studio...
But I am still not there...
