Hi. I am trying to modify a version of easy peasy Linux so that it is more accessible on
my netbook (an Acer Aspire1). Easy peasy is a derivative of Ubuntu and I am currently
having problems with pulse audio. When using pulseaudio speech was a little laggy (even
after switching to using speech-dispatcher). I also had some orca crashes, who's
source is still unknown to me, though I have been informed it is probably because I am
using a netbook.
When I use Alsa I still have the odd orca crash but this is usually easy to resolve simply
by restarting orca, or killing and restarting speech-dispatcher. The problem is I have no
system sounds and I get an Alsa error when trying to log in to Skype through the terminal,
some problem with bluetooth something. I can paste the error later if it is of any
use/reference.
I am now using Alsa but can't seem to get multi channel sounds, I.E speech and/or
system sounds, I only have speech.
Any help fixing these issues and suggestions for alternative configurations/audio systems
would be appreciated.

ALSA and PulseAudio are not alternatives to each other. PulseAudio uses ALSA.

You need to buy a proper sound card with hardware mixing (e.g.
SB Audigy) or configure Alsa to do software mixing. Why modern

Oh wait, I just saw an nice bit of news: ALSA 1.0.9rc2 or later
supports software mixing by default, but you probably don't have
that version yet.

into some text file. I don't need that so I'll leave that to
the others to explain who have such a setup...

Sorry guys it was just a joke. It was a skull painted with ascii code. ;)I
think that the only interesting feature in pulseaudio is the server-client
structure which lets you control another audio device through the net.
If you are using linux for audio pro (for example if u use more than a sound
card), pulseaudio can be very annoying if you are tryin' to set up your DAW
especially if you are running ubuntu.

Hi list. I am still having problems getting my sound to work properly (or as I would like
it). Currently I can play speech or something else but I can't have speech and any
other kind of sound together. I have upgraded my distro to 9.04 and switched from the EEE
kernel to a generic Kernel. I am now also running version 1.0.21 of the Alsa driver,
library and Utils. Would this now have Dmix by default and if so I'm guessing I need
to do some configuration in order to get multi channel sound.
I don't really know much about sound or working with Alsa so if any-one knows some
links to some fairly simple documentation that can give me the building blocks I may need
to try and fix this problem that would be great.

As far as I understood it (from http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin) it should
be working out of the box. From what you wrote now it doesn't seem to be. :(
So you need to set it up manually. You can find a howto on the aforementioned
page, i.e. http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin
