Hey hey,
given, that I don't have a framebuffer setup, what is the easiest way to
render one termain "snapshot" to an image file that can be part of a slide
show or video?
I have seen fbdump and fbgrab, which rely on the framebuffer and have proven
them to fail. Everything else I found is for the desktop or to be launched in
a desktop environment.
Any help, pointers are appreciated!

Hey Jeanette,
Why don't you run a screen session and save everything to a log? Then,
you can take the text itself and render it out in whatever way you need.
Here is what you can do:
screen -L
(Do tty/console stuff)
exit
Then you will have everything you just did in that screen session saved
to text. On my machine, it saves to screenlog.0 in the directory I
started screen in.

I'm not sure but have a look at:
man vcs, check the examples
man setterm, look for --dump

I love this! It's simple and lowlevel. I think I found a convert (ImageMagick)
command to convert text to an image. Could you tell me, if this is readable,
please?

In case anyone is interested, it uses the text: input:
cat textfile | convert -font Courier text:- -resize 1280x720! image.jpg
The resize to 1280x720 is to fit in with my usual image format, so I can
easily create a kind of slideshow with ffmpeg.

It's readable but the font seems compressed in height.
I tried to give the same command as yours but mine wasn't compressed. It might
have to do with your console settings.
It's been a long time since I was fiddling with my console settings so I'm
probably out of my depth here but check:
/etc/default/console-setup
/etc/vconsole.conf

Yes, my console is set up with 30 lines, instead of the very common 25
lines. This has been quite an improvement for my daily work. At least I
know where I set this, so I can debate with myself whether it's worth
changing this to create a few "screenshots".
