Hi,
I can record from the analogue inputs on my audiophile 24/96 using:
ecasound -i alsawh,0,0 -o whatever.wav
Is it possible to record from the spdif input? I've been googling quite
a bit, and I don't understand if or how I can relate device or subdevice
numbers to the spdif input.
(btw, using the latest alsa release).

First of all, check you alsa.conf (slocate alsa.conf) to see if it
already has a spdif device listed, mine does. Try:
cat /location/of/your/alsa.conf | grep spdif
Mine says that...
pcm.spdif cards.pcm.iec958
...is available, so to use aplay as an example, this would mean
something like these:
aplay -D spdif mysound.wav
aplay -Dplug:spdif mysound.wav
Frankly, I'm not sure which one is right or how ecasound does this.
The ecasound docs and examples are a great place to start. There is
also someone who has apparenetly dealt wtih your exact problem (OK,
slightly different card) right here:

And at the bottom I have posted my own /etc/asound.conf for my Delta
1010. Channels are accessed for recording or playback by their pcm
name (Ex. arecord -D ice1712_spdif myfile.wav) once they are set up.

This file is very interesting... and I never noticed it :-/
My problem is quite different and excuse me if I jump in here...
I have an staudio DSP2000 C-Port and for audio all is OK (I haven't tried
spdif yet, but I don't need it). The card has 3 MIDI ports: 2 OUTs and 1
IN, but I can't get MIDI IN to work :-(
MIDI OUT works ok (at least MIDI OUT 1) - I think alsa get confused by the
2 OUTS, because with aconnect I see 2 INs too!
Maybe that file can be the solution? Who is creating it? It can be edited?
There is documentation about it?
Too many questions ;-)

Yes, I can also do this with aplay and arecord,
however, i was having a
few overuns with arecord and so decided to try ecasound instead. My
problem is that I don't know how the "-D spdif" or "-D
plug:spdif"
translates to ecasound flags.

I think it should be without the pcm.
-i alsa,spdif
the pcm. just defines the type and spdif is the name

try putting this to ~/.asoundrc
spdif_cap {

slave.pcm {
type hw
card 0
device 0
}
}
This assumes Audiophile 2496 is card 0
Then try:
ecasound -i alsa,spdif_cap -o alsa,plughw:0
or -o test.wav, but with the former you can monitor your spdif from the
analog outputs (of course you can do the same with envy24control and
setting the hw outs to spdif, from the patchbay/router)
