Hi guys,
I was wondering if there was an in depth guide about linux
distrobutions optimized for live music performance. So far, I haven't
found much comparative info.
I'm just looking for a good solution to use my laptop live for signal
processing and use Max/MSP with a midi foot controller. The thing I'm
worried about is my laptop's performance, so I'm avoiding bloated
distros. I'll only be using this for live stuff, so I don't need any
extra stuff.

I have this laptop preformance problem, so my workaround is to:
- make a custom rc7.d runlevel which deactivate all background services
- deactivate cron by commenting out /etc/crontab
- suppress trackerd (by de-installing it)
- use evilwm instead of my standard gnome (to avoid memory overhead)
I have only 256MB of ram but this works this way on ubuntu

you can't use Max/MSP on linux.

you can't use Max/MSP on linux.
But you can use jMax from Ircam

What do you guys think of this:
I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu Studio since it strikes me as being
the best supported distrobution of Linux and coupling it with a window
manager like fluxbox for better performance. Once I get everything
running and gain more experience with Linux, Ill convert to a smaller
faster distro?
I've heard many of you say Musix. Why that one? What advantages does
it have over, say... JAD or Ubuntu Studio. What do you guys think of
those distros for live performance?

Ubuntu Studio comes with a low-lat kernel and some nice applications all
set and ready to go. It's a fine starting point.

Sounds good except for the conversion part: IMO people should get
familiar with their distribution and not change the whole distribution
all the time. If you're familiar with your setup, you can make it
small and fast without a reinstall just by configuring it to be fast
and small. That's possible with Ubuntu as well as with Debian, Fedora,
Studio64 or whatever.

I rely on 64 Studio which is available in 64bit or 32bit, depends on
your CPU. It gives me the lowest latency and I checked out several
distros. PD might give you some trouble in 64bit mode, at least it was
with the widespread 0.39 versions and I see still some bugs in 0.40.
There is a huge rewriting at Cycling 74 to modernize Max/MSP and maybe
someday it is available for Linux too. But I prefer Open Source anyway.
Forget jMax, its old and unsupported.
