I was just playing with the "swing" knob in Hydrogen's mixer and I
can't
hear the effect. Can anyone who has used it or knows exactly what it does
to the note timing give me any context for this?
Is it a subtle swing effect that might be lost on a mere guitarist such as
myself or should I be able to hear something pretty dramatic going on?

You should notice the timing is slightly forward or behind. IMO, the
effect works best in combination with velocity and timing. It will also
take a few repetitions of the loop to really kick in.

That is swing? And what exactly does the timing option? And btw. when
using Hydrogen as a MIDI player, the timing unlikely is forwarded, but
drums always should be a little bit forwarded and never be even a
little bit behind.
Anyway, to notice timing effects I recommend to use a natural sounding
drum set. It won't sound natural without using the humanize options, it
does sound natural when using those options, unfortunately it then
doesn't sound like a good drummer. It sounds to much out of time for my
taste.

I remember that when I used Hydrogen a long time ago the timing
option did affect the timing. I don't remember that the swing option did
affect it, perhaps it did, perhaps not.
"A "swing note" or "shuffle note" is a performance practice,
mainly in
jazz-influenced music, in which some notes with equal written time
values are performed with unequal durations, usually as alternating
long and short. Music of the Baroque and Classical notes inégales era
follow similar principles. A swing or shuffle rhythm is the rhythm
produced by playing repeated pairs of notes in this way.[9] Lilting can
refer to swinging, but might also indicate syncopation or other subtle
ways of interpreting and shaping musical time. A blues shuffle or

IOW swing isn't just variance of the timing, it's smart phrasing. So
perhaps Hydorgen cares about it, so that it just has got impact to some
kind of rhythms. Perhaps the OP should ask at Hydrogen mailing list

audible to me. "Velocity," if I crank it all the way up, makes sounds play
at different volumes than I programmed them for. Likewise, if I open
"timing" all the way up I can hear things that are supposed to happen at
exactly the same time happen in quick succession. That's more or less what
I expected.
I still can't clearly hear the effect of H2's "swing." It could be me
or
it could be my sequence.
It doesn't really matter for what I'm doing right now so I'm not going to
pursue it further today. I'm mostly curious.

Last time I used it it only did work on the 8ths. It delays the second
eight to make it more like eight-triplet with two bound eights and a
single eight. I think the help of hydrogen actually stated that.
Of course you won't hear the effect if you have only quarters and
sixteenths...
