hi *!
a guitarist friend of mine is looking for ways to get six separate
outputs from a guitar, one for each string. he has a godin multiac,
which comes with a 13-pin connector meant for the roland gr series
guitar synthesizers - i wonder what would be involved in using the
signal directly? if you've tried this, or know someone who has, please
holler!
next time i can get my hands on the instrument, i'll try some hi-z
preamps (i guess it's a more or less raw piezo output)...
also, i'd be interested to learn of replacement pickups for other
guitars in humbucker or single coil format that provide six signal outs...

Look for hexaphonic pickup on your search engine of choice :)
They've been around for a while now.
The more sophisticated ones are dual coil - the second coil being an exciter
(fed from the first via a local amplifier) and can give incredible sustain
effects.

huh, so those actually have coils? I thought they were mounted between
strings and bridge and had piezos for every string...

i would imagine that as you know the output for the pickup for each
string, you can use it do do 'noise'-cancellation on the outputs for
the other strings. the same principle as noise-cancellation headphones
use

Depends. You have to start with a reasonably low crosstalk, otherwise
combining the signals to separate the strings requires too much gain
and will be very sensitive to small variations in the crosstalk.
Another potential problem with this is that the vibration of a string
is the sum of two components: a vibration to/from the pickup, and one
orthogonal to that direction. These two modes could very well have
different crosstalk coefficients. If that's the case, separation of
the signals becomes almost impossible.

As pointed by others, have a look at the Roland GK3 hexaphonic pickup.
Then you might be interested by a PD patch made by Miller Puckette

He uses a custom pickup/interface under Linux which he and his students
built. On the LAC in Cologne (was it 2008?) he demonstrated it together
with his PD patch.

thanks everybody for your helpful replies!
our first approach will be to use the godin's piezo outs as-is and feed
them to very high-impedance preamps, see what happens. when that gives
interesting results, the next step will be to explore magnetic or piezo
replacement pickups for other axes.
