Yesterday I had a small local radio station get in touch with me as they're
looking to switch from Windows to Linux for their streaming server. I'll be
helping them out just as a favour and because it sounds like it could be
fun but I don't really have any experience with the various Linux streaming
solutions so I thought I'd post on here to see if anyone has any tips?
I've not been down to check out their existing setup but I don't think they
want much more than to be able to stream recordings and Skype. I think
Skype lacks JACK support so maybe that will require a bit of messing to get
it to play nicely (if we use a JACK based streaming solution).
Did the OSM podcast guys ever do a write-up/ HOWTO I could read? Any other
good resources for those setting up a small, Linux-based radio station?

I've used Liquidsoap for the past couple of years to run eargazm.com, an
Internet radio station that's been on the air and Linux-powered) since
1999.

You may want to check out airtime:
http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/airtime/ - it's a kitchen sink solution
and may be more than what you want or need.
As for skype & jack, you can use the alsa loopback device or alsa-jack
plugin to bridge non-jack clients - incl skype - to jack. With icecast
and darkice are your friend but be aware that there's a lot of details
for a proper radio station..

IDJC is nice too. It does use jack, but their website has some ideas on
getting an alsa source in there too. (I am actually looking at setting
this up, but have been too busy on other things) There is also mixxx, but
it seems to be more picky about video drivers and (in my case) is too big
for my screen, so I haven't played with it enough to comment.
In any case, I would suggest getting the skype part of things figered out
on your own machine, before playing with theirs.

It has basic signal flow function and configuration is quite
straightforward, I've used it with icecast and shoutcast, really nice.

(plus any of the other solutions) enough to make a good comparison?
I can't see any mention of JACK support on the Airtime site and we may need
this to get Skype working but the other two do claim JACK support. I get
the impression Airtime has the most features otherwise but I expect they'll
gladly trade stability and ease of use/ maintenance over a flashy set of
features.

I know that Airtime uses Liquidsoap to provide the stream to icecast
or whatever that part of their chain is; I also know that Liquidsoap
supports jack quite nicely so you should have no problem.

Sorry, no.
I looked at airtime (I think before it was airtime) in the dim past. I have
used rivendell much more. I would say it is more geared to running a
professional broadcast radio station. IDJC looks more like you want to be in
front of the app.
Rivendell will let you make events, clocks, grids, and schedule music for a
day and chain to the next day's music when done. Fun stuff for me at least.
The station may already have software to do what rivendell does though.
The stations I work for use windows software for that. We then pull the onair
feed into a linux box running darkice which then sends to a local icecast2
server. From there, we pull that stream from our account with a stream
hosting company.

The only comparison I can make is IDJC and an analog station (CBC Northern
services). IDJC does pretty much what any analog setup for one control
room might do.
Because the audio is all Jack, it would be quite possible to have one
computer running an ijdc as an on-air control room and switch other
computers with their own IDJC instance in and out (using netjack)...
It seemed to be that on-air control would do music and spots, but switch
to another studio for news or interview type shows (if they were live,
most would be prerecorded). It could just as easy go to a transmitter as a
codec to Inet.
Where we had cart machine and turntables for music, spots and prerecorded
shows, these have files. The files can be precoded as mp3, ogg, flac or
whatever, but IDJC decodes them to audio for mixing anyway so flac or wav
files would mean the audio output could be broadcast quality and there
should be no problem with using files head to head of different file type
or sample rate... At any one time you might have as many as 4 different
file streams being mixed together (not practical or likely, just
possible).
I have not tried pulling in anything direct from CD or a bank of CD
machines. Most desktops show the songs on an audio CD as wav files though,
so it should be possible... I have noticed that it sometimes seems to take
a while for the DE to get to the point of showing the wav files, but if
they are put in far enough ahead of use it should be fine. Most computers
can handle 3 or 4 CD/DVD players these days.... I would stick to two
though, as I have seen opening one drive stop the other from playing while
it opens if they are both on the same IDE cable.
IDJC just deals with the audio path, it does not deal with the admin at
all. Some of the other software does I think (Rivendell?).

Airtime has no internal method of broadcasting live audio. It broadcasts
prerecorded or will accept an icecast input stream. It actually recommends
either IDJC or mixxx to generate live streams (reading through the docs)
to input to airtime. It does do admin stuff though and will stream files.

I am just reminded (by another broadcaster I am just now chatting with) of
teamspeak. It has the same issues as skype, but is good for doing round
table kinds of things with more than two sites..

Great to hear liquidsoap supports JACK!
I think we'll be trying Airtime first and should that not work out we'll
give Rivendell a shot.
I'm aware of teamspeak and I'd rather not support the MS/Skype voip virtual
monopoly but in my experience Skype (under Linux) is much more reliable and
fully featured than any other voip solution and it is of course what people
know and have installed already.

We gave Airtime a go over the weekend but we came across two showstoppers.
One was that we couldn't add any media (MP3s or WAVs) via its web
interface. This did work running the airtime-import command as root but
thats not a workable solution. The other major issue, which I think Len
already mentioned was that Airtime doesn't seem to have any support for
live feeds ie Skype or a mic input. It would've been nice to control the
station almost entirely from a web interface but it looks like we'll have
to try Rivendell instead now.
