Hey all,
I used to produce some dubstep songs (totally synthesized) using various
proprietary solutions,
but I'm recently attracted to the bass frequencies again.
Hence I'm looking for a good synth for bass, with plenty of assignable
LFO's, Portamento, and... sounding good!
I've a little experience with MX44, another little bit with AlsaMod Synth, a
bit of a giggle with ZynSubAdd, a play around
with the recent Yoshimi, but I'm not convinced of any really heavy bass yet.
Chances are that I've not got the right settings for the synth, Just
wondering if there's any dubstep guys out there using linux synths,
or if anybody has any PD dubstep patches?

Hey Harry,
Why not try layering them together and perhaps adding some light distortion
or something to the sound?
Incidentally, I did do a 'wobble' bass for Bristol's Prophet52 emulation in
this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPX5kNxRsy4 (around 0:49 or so).
All in all, I'd say just try layering them together to create a really big
boomy bass sound!

I think i've got them running on my studio pc anyway, I'd better check them

for some reason they didnt come to mind straight away when i was browsing
synths..
PD patches & more suggestions welcome of course.. but Ill have a mess with

I don't know whether it's the right kind of bass, but nekobee is an
afaik quite realistic TB-303 emulation. xsynth seems to be quite simple
but popular, phasex is very powerful and there are plenty more options
(3x calf, analogmodellingsynth, ...), hell, you could try to paint your
basslines using arss :)

Isn't Dubstep bass all about FM synthesis?
You really can't get that complex harmonic bwaaaap sound with just
filters alone. The muse of Chowning must be invoked.
My Yam db60xg (NEC XR385 actually) has several awesome basses, and if
it's not right, use qxgedit to morph it into one, and then twiddle
around the filter x-over, widths and slopes (graphically by mouse, it
rocks) and ADSR based on the bpm of the bass you're playing and you're
like there dude :-) . I'm not sure how much of these AWM2 basses are
"just filters alone" versus FM, versus FM'd samples of basses (which
is what makes yamaha's sound so good). But whatever it is, it works.
Also, some of their excellent sounding patches are actually
combinations of two voices, each with their own sets of filters etc.
See also Yamaha SY77 and SY99 and their emulations, which have good
bass sounds with rich modulation.
Regarding the db50xg -- Rui was absolutely right when he wrote (
http://www.rncbc.org/drupal/node/151 ): "This is strictly pure
nineties memorabilia but one of the finest pieces of junk you could
rig into a PC and turn it on a full-fledged rave machine. Do you
remember the days? Awe my 8)"
Since FM is probably one of the easiest forms of synthesis to
"compute" (c.f. chowning) look for Yamaha FM bass patches for
starters. Consider also the deicsonze (french for Dx11) synth, such as
comes with Muse: /usr/lib64/muse/synthi/deicsonze.so

I'd say Phasex, it can do really fat basslines.
I think it's great for drum and bass (reece ...) but it should also work
for dubstep with more lfo modulation.

AMS if you want binary packages, or Ingen if you feel like chasing CVS.
Put in dozens of LFO's if you like; the sky's the limit.

You sure that amsynth can't pull off a dubstep wobble bass?
The ingredients are relatively simple:
One lowpass filter
One LFO routed to the filter cutoff
One or Two Oscillators (I'd say having a sine or triangle an octave lower or
at the same pitch as the other oscillator would be good here).
Then just filter the oscs quite low to remove the highs and set the LFO
running fairly fast-ish!

A word of warning: I haven't used amSynth at all, but the general principles
should be the same for all synths (generalised statement after generalised
statement!).
Basically your signal chain should go:
Oscillators -> Filter in -> Output
^

LFO
So you should feed the connect the oscillators to the Glame Lowpass input as
well.

Not sure if the ascii came out correct. So what I need is a low pass that
has two input connections? A CV input and a signal input?
The LFO feeds the cv input and the oscillator/s feed the normal(?) input.

amSynth is not suited for Dubstep wobbles, it simply lacks the proper
functionality.
Maybe Bristol could pull the trick too.

'filter_mod_amount' and CC 27 to 'LFO_Freq'.

Software or that you can make sounds like that with your dubstep
instrument for Yoshimi?
