hi...
my new laptop is running the maestro3 oss driver... its a dell latitude cpxJ
seems to be running fine so far... but in order to use ardour, jack, etc. i
will need to install alsa...
is the maestro3 supported yet?...
if so, which module do i use?...
and if not, my option is to install the alsa drivers for my usb-audio
quattro... sooo...
how do i go about writing a modules.conf which uses both oss and alsa?

works with the nm256 driver. But there are really irritating bugs
that cause the machine to freeze maybe 1 out of 3 times that i load
the drivers (at startup). :-(

hmmm this sounds difficult and a little beyond my skills....
how do i then go about option #2 - installing the alsa drivers for my
usb-quattro, but keeping the oss drivers for the maestro3?...

Yes, but its a bit crap. The module is snd-maestro3.
I can;t get it run reliably at < 1024 samples / period, even with a
patched kernel. Also my machine (i8100) doesn't seem to like ACPI much.

Huh?
I used to regularly test with oss and alsa by just rmmoding the relevant
modules and inserting the other when I needed to switch. You shouldn't
need to use modules.conf for the maestro3 with OSS let alone two. IIUC
only ALSA makes that requirement.

A bit kludgy but possible. I have both /etc/modules.conf.oss and
/etc/modules.conf.alsa, and use a small shell script to switch
between them and clean out the old modules (and some other stuff,
not relevant here):

ln -s /etc/modules.conf.oss /etc/modules.conf
lsmod | awk '/^snd/ {print $1}' | xargs modprobe -r

alsa) rm /etc/modules.conf

You should probably try it incase its better on your machine.

Greetings:
In the past I've had to keep OSS/Free, ALSA, and OSS/Linux on the same
machine. I found it easiest to load/unload the module sets with
insmod/rmmod as needed. Of course OSS/Linux provided the handy
soundon/soundoff so it was a simple matter to remove it when necessary.
