Hey all,
I'm sure we all know these artists using a formant filter to shape their
basses to "talk", but
do we have one of these filters as a LADSPA or even better an Lv2?
I've found one LADSPA:

But that's only one vowel... anybody know of more resources?

Sorry I'm replying a bit beside your question. But if you don't find nice
formant filters in LADSPA or LV2, you can always rely on Csound. They even
have a udo (user defined opcode) for that. It's easy to use. I think PureData
(PD) also has them.
Generally speaking formant filters are just a combination of different
simple filter types. At least the way I found them. So you could always try to
combine a few resonating filters (lowpass, highpass, bandpass,...). I know
there are those in LADSPA and I'm quite confident you'd find LV2 equivalents
as well.

I've been curious about this too. Using the FOF opcode for granular sounds
like the real deal, and is the common practice in Csound...but going the
other way, and starting with buzz or abuzz and filtering is theoretically
possible; after all, our voice is not really doing granular synthesis, but
subtractive multi-filter synthesis.
My question is: what filter to use then? Resin? Butterbp? Will they just
give similar results that are recognizably formant-like, but colored
differently?
My admittedly brief experiments in this area didn't work as well as FOF, but
maybe someone has working code to share.

Hello Aaron!
Look at csounds.com and the udo section. There is a udo called vowel, which
looks exactly like what youwant. Or you can try Fofilter which is still based
on grains, but you can feed it an audio signal from which the grains are
taken. At least, that is, how I understood it.
In any case: You will need resonating filters. So I think the buterworth
filters are out.
