Intermediate result:
Analog out 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and
ADAT out 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 are available, there is audio
output.
Outputs 9, 10 are not tested.
I did listen to one after the other, not to all at the same time, so
they might or might not be in sync.
ALSA mixer is useless, the channels are stereo pairs, so you cannot
adjust a single channel. I don't care, I keep them at max output
and use the DAW's mixer, since you anyway can't rout monitoring. The
analog outputs 7 and 8 are assigned to the phones output, if you want
to use head phones, then you need to use jack to route all channels to
7 and 8. IOW seemingly you need to decide, if you want 8 analog outputs
or 6 outputs and headphones. "Main" seems to be unused. ALSA mixer
allows to set up the clock, available are "ADAT", "SPDIF" or
"internal".
I chose "internal" and sync the ADA8000 by wc.
I made a Qtractor loop with 16 instances of fluidsynth DSSI and 2
instances of hexter DSSI, IOW just MIDI, no audio tracks. I used one
output of each DSSI instrument, by jack I assigned 9 DSSI outputs to
playback_7 and 9 DSSI outputs to playback_8.
Usually I use rt patched kernels, for the test I'm using a default
kernel from the official Arch repositories.
The CPU is an AMD dual-core 2.1 GHz, on an ASUS M2A-VM HDMI mobo,
without the HDMI thingy mounted.
Very seldom I get an inaudible xrun (quasi never) with the below jackd
settings.

New subject: PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL
Apart from the Linux compatibility aspects, how do you like the sound of
it? I just got a Presonus Monitor Station v2 to control my monitors,
and I'm still troubleshooting to make sure it's the Monitor Station's
fault, but I'm noticing some disappointing coloration of the sound.
Since this is the first piece of Presonus gear I've ever bought, I'm
wondering what others are experiencing with it.

...just playing fluid DSSI and hexter DSSI, 18 individual outputs at
the same time (8 anlog + 8 ADAT + 2 SPDIF). I don't have a reference at
the moment, as long as the sound quality shouldn't be really bad, I
can't notice sound issues, with the gear available at the moment. It
might be, that even the UB2442FX-Pro doesn't work. If so, I need to ask
a friend to use his Mackie, but the Mackie also isn't good.

The XLR adapters are cheap and apart from the broken Behringer mixer's
knobs, which worked yesterday, but might fail within the next days, the
XLR adapters have tendencies to fail. Fortunately 6 of them were never
used before, so they might work without issues during the period of
Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Hi :)
all 18 outputs, including SPDIF, playback_9 and playback_10 work at the
same time. Outputs 7 and 8, playback_7 and playback_8 are the same as
phones out and playback_1 and playback_2 are the same as main out.
Playback_1 to playback_8 are analog out and the other are ADAT out. IOW
the PreSonus provides 18 individual outputs. 64 Frames/Period works,
too, but 128 Periods/Frames is absolutely stable, when using the mouse,
open apps etc., there is just one exception, using the USB mouse wheel
in roxterm does cause xruns, anywhere else the USB mouse wheel doesn't
cause issues. I can't say much about the sound quality, since the mixer
isn't already good when not broken, but actually it's broken. I suspect
the outputs aren't the best, but most likely usable. I'll do more tests,
but until now I like the PreSonus. One issue are click noises when
starting the computer or starting Qtractor, while no xruns happen. They
seem to be louder than with other sound cards, resp. usually no click
should be audible at all, when just starting Qtractor, however,
launching e.g. Evolution and Claws doesn't cause issues, when Qtractor
is running, still with 16 * Fluidsynth DSSI and 2 * Hexter DSSI. Note,
I'll do stereo mixing anyway with my RME HDSPe AIO, but since the Linux
driver is crap and I want to connect my iPad by ADAT with my Linux
PC, I'll buy a second PreSonus, assuming it should work with the iPad
and assuming I shouldn't notice issues when doing more tests. However,
I suspect hat it fits to my needs. FWIW I didn't test accuracy between
the PreSonus and the ADA8000, but by just listening, I couldn't notice
an audible issue. As already pointed out, I synced by WC. I'm using an
expensive Sommer cable and terminated with a 75 Ohm resistor and FWIW
everything used is 75 Ohm.
As you can see by [1], I didn't wait for Christmas Eve as wanted by [2].
4.9-rt1 builds without issues on Arch Linux.

levels, its just required to set up the sync (internal|SPDIF|ADAT). Btw. the PreSonus only
provides WC out, not WC in, so when using WC, it only could be used as master.
I'll test recording ASAP, but first I have to test iPad compatibility.
In regards to sound quality, I'll connect it at least to an hifi amp and compare with
hifi equipment.

Is there any audio interface providing ADAT I/Os known to work with an

all, but ADAT I/Os allow to connect with any other kind of gear, from

audio interface, with 8 analog I/Os, so if possible, I want to stay with
the PreSonus. I'm even thinking of buying a second one, because of my
RME's ADAT issues.
I'll try to get a powered USB hub ASAP. Unfortunately you can't buy one
in Germany during Christmas and I'm sure only one of my friends does
know what a powered USB hub is, owns one and would be willing to borrow
me one, however, usually we use our free time during Christmas, so I
dislike to bother him and will wait until after Christmas, to buy one.
Unfortunately this issue rains on my holidays parade :D.

claims that there should be no issues with an iPad, but the card is too
expensive. Btw. just because there are claims about compatibility, this
isn't necessarily true. My AIO should work with Linux, too, but
actually only 2 ADAT channels are available by jack. The manual didn't
mention with what version of iOS the Babyface Pro does work. Anyway, if
it wouldn't be that expensive, I would order and test it.

I have one, it does 4x4 + adat. Audio quality is perfect.
Just one thing to keep in mind: outputs 1 and 2 are
real balanced ones, with an inverted signal on XLR pin 3,
so to be careful when connecting to an unbalanced input
(this requires a non-standard cable).
Surprisingly, line inputs 3 and 4 are unbalanced.

something similar. Both devices cost around 300 bucks. Without doubts a
measurement does shoe issues, but a measurement doesn't show how much
impact it has got within the chain of equipment.
