This is my first post to this list -- thanks in advance for advice. (Actually, I posted
this first on the jackit mailing list as it seems to be a jack configuration issue, but it
went ignored there for about 2.5 days so I'm trying again here.)
I'm trying to configure Jack 1.9.6 on Ubuntu 10.04 (with real-time kernel) to use all
four channels of an M-Audio fast track pro. The class-compliant USB audio driver reads a
pair of stereo devices:
card 1: Pro [FastTrack Pro], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Pro [FastTrack Pro], device 1: USB Audio [USB Audio #1]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I've set up a merged device in .asoundrc and tested directly against alsa, no
problem:
1. Play a stereo, 44.1 kHz, 16 bit file to hw:1,0.
2. Play the same file to hw:1,1.
3. Use SuperCollider to make a four channel version of the same file, and play this to the
merged device.
All of these tests are successful -- so I think the .asoundrc configuration is correct.
Jack can use either of the stereo devices -- hw:1,0 or hw:1,1 -- for playback with no
problem. I've been using that successfully for almost two years now.
But... (-Chw:1,1 is for the FTPro's stereo input)

Hm, sorry for what turns out to be a bit of noise. I just found some old threads online
about bugs in the Intel USB chipset[1] which I would guess is in a large majority of
consumer laptops, maybe even desktops, on the market today. Those bugs seem to be the
cause of the "broken pipe" when ALSA tries to talk to the device.
I guess I'm lucky to get 2-in, 2-out.
Needless to say, I am exceedingly annoyed about this. One more stupid hardware thing to
check when looking at new machines...

[1] Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset USB2 Enhanced Host Controller. On my
machine it's "rev 05" but I guess it hasn't been fixed.

Looks promising. I've hesitated to upgrade to 12.04 because of some reports of USB
audio devices not being recognized :-O
Probably what I should do is get another memory stick, put 12.04 "live" on it in
and try out the device that way before committing to upgrade my main install.
Also (for the sake of paranoia or caution, if nothing else) -- I can't imagine why the
low latency kernel for 12.04 would not have the patch, but stranger things have happened.
My situation seems to be a little different manifestation. I do get duplex operation with
the m-audio -- 2-in + 2-out works fine in Jack. It's only when I try 2-in + 4-out that
it dies. I tried this morning to test playback only:
/usr/bin/jackd -S -P60 -dalsa -r44100 -p1024 -n2 -Pft4 -s
... but no dice. ALSA says something about trying to acquire card Audio0 in addition to
Audio1 (though there is no need to do so), and then I get a long string of
"JackAudioDriver::ProcessSync: read error, skip cycle." This is the same error I
got when I was trying the laptop's built-in hardware for capture and the four-channel
device for playback. This puzzles me. I thought I was asking jack for playback only, but
the behavior is the same as when I also requested capture from a different device. Maybe
it's just that the merged device doesn't work at all with the kernel bug :)
