When I installed UBStudio 12.04 I was glad to see that PA just created
the sink/sources in JACK and I didn't have to go figure something out.
It's quite nice to be able to patch things around from the PA devices.
I have yet to configure a surround sound system and have not seen
anything showing up labeled as front, side rear, etc. (Is there a
surround sound app? Do any of the apps that will play a dvd or bluray
on a PC provide surround? Haven't attempted it yet, just askin.)
Also, if you set the default to stereo, how does it choose whether to
use the jack (as in 3.5mm) on the front or the rear of the computer
case?

want and don't have to be
based on ITU standards? I'm planning on playing with ambisonics sometime
soon.
Jack remains as is with whatever number of channels your audio interface
has. Pulse by default now will create the same number of channels as well.
For a 10 channel card this is over doing things. Most uses of bridging
pulse to jack only require 2 channels (or even 1 for phone work). Jack
just calls channels 1, 2 ... to whatever. Pulse names them for surround up
to 7.1 and then calls any extra aux1 etc. I do not know if pulse also
plays with the sound to add surround stuff or not. I have had one user
tell me it does... but I don't know.
Personally, I would like to see the jack source/sink treated as a device.
If the jack detect module is loaded then a device appears for it weather
jack is running or not. It should allow jack to be set up in the same way
as a card, stereo, 5.1, 7.1. Input or output only etc. Then if jack does
show up that many lines are created. It really doesn't matter if the
device jack is talking to has more or even less channels than pulse sets
up.

You have to set the output volumes in a mixer app.

Not sure if we're talking about the same thing here. I wasn't suggesting
we make devices not show. Only that the module connecting PA to jack would
be stereo by default.

Are you saying you would be using jack through you firewire device to get
surround, instead of what I would assume you have, an onboard device that
also has surround support directly with PA?
Why use jack for that?
