Hi All,
I'm have still been struggling for a month, trying to connect mpd (possibly through
jack) and brutefir. The present problem is to make the ports assignments through amixer. I
tried :
amixer cset numid=5 ......
but it looks as if numid=5 is not the proper figure for HDSPe AIO (as it is for HDSP 9652,
Multiface...). To make sure it doesn't work, I used Klaus Schulz's scan script,
limited to 38 input channels (input 0-17, playback 18-37) and 20 output channels (0-19)
for my card. No sound out (whereas I can listen to music through Hdspmixer).

Does anyone have an idea of which numid to use ? Is there a config file where to watch the
working hdspmixer settings ?

I'm using the HDSPe AIO since years. I have given up to get it correctly
working. When I reported the bug to the ALSA developer mocking was all
I got. I contacted RME, they are willing to help ALSA developers, but
there seems to be no interested in supporting the HDSPe AIO for Linux.
On my machine HDSPmixer shows signals, that aren't available by jackd
ports. On my machine just ADAT ch 1 and 2 are available by jackd ports,
3 to 8 are "muted".
On my machine:
Analog IOs do work, S/PDIF IOs do work, ADAT 1 and 2 do work.
AES IOs aren't tested.
ADAT 3 to 8 don't work.
To test the sound card I installed FreeBSD 9.x and Windows XP. ADAT 3
to 8 are available on FreeBSD and Windows on my machine.
This might be different with other releases of the HDSPe AIO and other
mobos, I don't know.

I'am glad and sad to read you... glad because I was on the way to loose
my hair with this Linux setup, and I will give up very quickly !
Sad, because I really hoped to get to something with it. I had a nicely
working setup under windows XP with the HDSPe AIO, but on a noisy
machine, so I swithched to a fanless setup with the same soundcard...
implying a lighter OS than windows.
I encountered endless problems with jackd - now I understand why - so I
tried connecting mpd and brutefir through alsa. This brought me to the
amixer setup and the question I asked. The stupid thing is that
hdspmixer works fine, so it's really only a matter of knowing how to get
rid of that numid issue. I tried to swap the numid=5 with a numid=1 in
the cset command, as it seems that the corresponding numid for the AIO
is 1 instead of 5, but it doesn't work either.
It looks as if the RME forum has been down for some time (or at least
reacting a strange way, sometimes you get to a page, but usually not
two...), so no help to expect from them.
It's a real pity...

I never cared much about the stuff you cared.
The situation isn't hopeless, firewire and PCI ports will die out and
PCIe will become one replacement. I wished I would have bought one of
the RME PCI cards for around 100 EUR less, than the RME PCIe card ;).
My board has better support for PCI cards, than for PCIe ;).
