Hi all,
I discovered that travelling is more fun if my own music is in my ears. So I
decided (and my wife approved) to buy a mobile player. As big parts of my
music collection are oggs and I am to audiophile to reconvert them to mp3, I
am searching for a mobile player that can do ogg as well as mp3 (I don't give
anything for wma, aac or other proprietary stuff).
I like the way Apple makes things just work. If the Ipod nano played ogg I
would march into the next local supermarket that has them on discount
currently.
Who has experience with Linux on the Ipod (normal one without
nano/shuffle/etc...)? Is it stable and usable?
Which other players would you recommend for their abilities and usability?

If you don't mind second hand. Try to get hold of an iriver H320. Mine
has been working well for a couple of years now.

There is rockbox, which runs on some of the ipod models:

I personally got an iaudio U2 which is pretty nice, although it
sometimes won't mount properly unless it is switched on first.
Don't know if this is a linux problem, or a problem with the
device, although it seems to mount OK on my mac.

Which other players would you recommend for their

I run an TrekStor iBeat Organix FM. The receiver's quality is very good,
as the overall audio quality is. When playing OGG which are longer than
the usual song time, dropouts appear from time to time.
The internal battery gets loaded via the USB bus, while the battery
grants you enough hours of mobile music. It has two headphone outs and
a line in as well. The display material is a bit weak, so it needs some
protection to avoid scratches.
Unfortunately it has some drawbacks:
* usability (when you need the less used functions)
* trashed filesystem after connecting it to a Mac
* crashing every 5th time when using the voice recording capability
If you need a good sounding player with a good battery time and you can
get it for a reasonable price at ebay, I can recommend it. The hardware
seems to be well engineered, while the firmware seems to be buggy. Or I
just got a device with a defective flash.

I have purchased a 2GB iBeat Organix (without FM) last month, and been
really pleased with it.
Cool features :
- line in ; I used it for quickly recording our band in the rehearsal
studio, very handy.
- playback at variable speed ; this alters pitch, but being a drummer,
I found it useful anyway to decipher a performance (it is funny to
listen to, also).
Well, it was all good until the device broke this week, and now
refuses to start.
I am sending it back to customer service ; hope to get one back soon.
I am not too sure what happened to the unit (electrical shock surely
?) : it was plugged to the USB port when I turned my machine off. Then
the display on the device would be all lit, and it would not switch
off. It stayed like this for a few hours, and now, it will no longer
switch on, whether on USB or standalone.
I do not intend to bash this product, as - again- I am not sure what
happened ; although, I suppose it should survive normal machine
shutdown. Or should I lay the blame on ivman, which maybe did not
unmount it propely ? Or on this machine's admin (aka me) ?
Also, it could be one defective unit, these things happen. Well, I was
keen on sharing the experience, anyway.

I have a Samsung YP-MT6Z 1GB. Contains FM tuner and MP3/OGG player in a very
small package. Uses 1 AA battery and I get 40+ hours of playtime with 1
battery. Also does voice/FM radio/input recording in MP3 format. My only
wish was more memory capacity, but it's a great little player.

Hi,
again thanks to all who answered to my question some weeks ago.
I bought the iriver T50 and so far (two days of experience) all looks rather
good. Originally I wanted it for my travel to France last week, unnecessary
to say that it didn't arrive until the Wednesday when my wife had to fetch it
and so I couldn't use it on the travel. But now I can listen to audio-books,
my own music, and podcasts while walking through the city!
My wife instantly liked the recording possibilities with this piece of
technology. And I as a hobby-technician find the quality of the builtin-mic
not that bad.
In the next days I will certainly try to measure the frequency-response of
that thing to learn what the different equalizers (and espacially the SRS)
are doing...

Hi Arnold
I am using and older iRiver h120. I'm using a pair of etymotics 4p and
think it is good. It has "connectivity" that I haven't seen offered
on other players(and in the newer irivers). I has both line-in/out &
optical spdif in/out, but it is quite old
I am using the http://rockbox.org firmware on it. You can also use it
on most of the ipods I think(and get ogg support that way)

iRiver T30. Plays ogg files. Whne connected to computer, SuSE 10.2
asks me if I want to use Digikam, I approve and use this software to
manage files on the T30. Records mp3 mono.
