greetings!
perhaps some of you use RME hdsp hardware. i'm wondering if you're running into
issues like mine with recent kernels....
i've got an hdsp multiface hanging off an expresscard adapter in a T520 thinkpad.
here's what's going on:
hdspmixer locks up soon after starting, saying, "HwDep ioctl failed. Metering
stopped"
once that has happened, if i try to start jack, i get this:

and here's the clincher:
kernels up to and including 3.1-6 make it all work fine (with the same versions
of other things as listed above). however, kernels 3.2.0-3 and higher all cause
the issues reported above.
so, i guess the bottom-line question is whether other folks are running hdsp
hardware successfully on 3.2 or more recent kernels, or whether we're all stuck
at 3.1 for now?
amusing side-note: i'm trying to use a wacom tablet, which is fine with the 3.2
and higher kernels, but not with the 3.1 -- haha!!
please let me know if you have any relevant observations on this; it'd be nice to
have some reassurance that my multiface isn't seeing the beginning of the end!

Hi Peter!
I'm using a Multiface II, with Cardbus adapter on a relatively old laptop

Kernel @ 3.4.4-rt14-1-rt
Alsa @ 1.0.25
No issues running, although I have seen the "hardware monitoring disabled"
warning before (on a different install, never on this install.)
Happily runs for hours on end at 5ms, only Xruns are in-audiable and occur
only when under extreme DSP load (95% +)
Incidentally I'm also using a Wacom (Bamboo P&T) with the RT kernel,
working fine too :D
I can post details of my machine etc if you have anthing you'd like to know.

It can be a bug in alsa-tools that shows up with new kernels, that was a
problem a while back. Try getting the latest alsa-tools release
installed (1.0.26), I think I had to patch hdspmixer in previous
releases for it work fine with current kernels.

I'm using MultiFace II on whatever the latest is in Ubuntu Studio
12.04 x86_64 (I think it's 3.3+) without any problems. I am using a
PCIe card in a desktop machine, however.

If I start jack by QJackCtl, it's ok with and without D-Bus Interface
enabled.
HDSPMixer is version 1.11, it's the Precise default. I listed /usr/src,
I only compiled a kernel, nothing else, but the default lowlatency is ok
too.
I only removed the pulseaudio packages, but PA for sure didn't cause the
trouble you've got. I'm clueless. Usually I would recommend RME cards,
to get no or at least less trouble. I had to use Envy24 before, because
I couldn't pay for another card. FWIW Linux Envy24 support also is very
good, but I prefer RME.
I hope you don't need the tablet and the audio card at the same time,
until your issue isn't solved.

I agree and I don't think jack dbus will cause this issue. However, both
can cause issues on my machine. I also got issues when using jack1.
There might be some voodoo with my mobo, resp. the combination of
hardware. might cause issues.

The universal default response to any problem with audio on linux is
not
"remove pulseaudio". Sometimes there are audio problems that have
__nothing__ to do with pulse audio! Let's try to do some debugging
instead of guessing, please.

RME card can record, but not play when pulseaudio runs, but with the
Ubuntu Studio Precise default, this running bridge thingy, my RME PCIe

there is some confusion here. the pulse jacksink/source modules connect
pulse to JACK, not vice-versa. JACK will be using whatever hardware it was
told to use. the only situation in which JACK routes audio via Pulse is if
the user tells JACK to use an ALSA PCM device that is actually a pulse
pseudo-device (eg. "default" on a system set up with Pulse as the default).
Pulse may or may not work in situations where JACK is running, and if there
is only one audio interface and its used by Pulse, then JACK may not be
able to start either. But Pulse cannot intervene at the ALSA level seen by
JACK unless the user tells JACK to use the "wrong" device name.

I have a netbook with intel HDA audio. When I use Jack to run it the
lowest latency I can get jack to start at is -p128. At that latency the
wireless driver causes xruns on a regular basis. I also have an ART USB
audio interface. If I have manually unloaded the module-jackdbus-detect
module from pulse, The USB audio interface will start with jack with the
latency at -p 64 and no xruns. If I reload the same module I can now only
start the USB sound at -p 128 and I get the same xruns...on the USB card.
now if I configure pulse to ignore the internal sound interface...even
with the module-jackdbus-detect module loaded and streaming sound through
pulse and then jack... I can start jack at -p 64 with no problem. Pulse
does in some cases affect jack. I have repeated this more than once it is
always the same. Low latency kernel, jack is starting in RT.
In the same way that I do not know the internals of jack, I don't know the
internals of pulse. I am sure you know more than I do about both. But it
is hard to argue with experimental data.

there is some confusion here. the pulse jacksink/source modules connect
pulse to JACK, not vice-versa. JACK will be using whatever hardware it was
told to use. the only situation in which JACK routes audio via Pulse is if
the user tells JACK to use an ALSA PCM device that is actually a pulse
pseudo-device (eg. "default" on a system set up with Pulse as the
default).

I don't remember the name of the GUI, but it was a GUI to set up
pulseaudio. The GUI did show my 2 Envy24 cards, but not the RME card, what
ever hw the RME was, usually the RME is hw:0.

you... It should see every ALSA device. (should is a dirty word) I don't
have any RME HW to play with though, just an ensoniq (for MIDI only) and a
D66 (envy24) on the desktop and a netbook with internal and USB for MIDI
or Audio (I haven't tried plugging in both the USB audio and MIDI IFs) I
don't really know.

And there's the rub, especially when it thinks wrongly. This seems to
occur more often than not IME. Sound always[1] worked perfectly for me
*until* pulseaudio came along. I wouldn't mind so much if it was an
optional package you could install if *you wanted* to.
[1] There was a problem where alsa used to mute the audio output on boot
for a while.
P.S. I don't use linux to create music, but then again, that is what I
thought linuxmusicians was for. (eek! its a forum! That might explain
things?)

Now there's sound for Firefox Youtube and if I use Thunar and click on a

For QjackCtl and Yoshimi also everything is ok.
Removing the meta packages doesn't remove the apps. If needed I would
build a pulseaudio dummy package using equivs, at the moment it's
unneeded.

No, AV Linux is the only 32-bit install, all other installs are 64-bit.

Peter, do you have PCI Express power management turned on in the BIOS on
your Thinkpad? I'm using a Multiface with the HDSPe expresscard on a
Thinkpad X220, working fine now. I had to turn that power management
option off because it was causing trouble. My issues were more severe
though. The whole system would be extremely slow to start up and then
respond to any of my actions with the expresscard plugged in. The exact
behaviour might be different from machine to machine though and I
believe it has to do with some incompatibility between the Thinkpad PCIe
implementation and the RME card. Seen these issues mentioned on RME
forums.
That you're having issues with newer kernels might somewhat support the
power management theory because Linux behaviour regarding PCIe ASPM
(active state power management) has changed at some point, 3.2 I think -
it is now supposed to better detect whether the system supports ASPM and
enable it to save power, whereas before it would not enable it on many
systems (info from phoronix,

Strange though that your self-compiled 3.0 has the problem as well.

this is the solution to my problems. hdspmixer also runs fine now.
so, bottom line: anybody running RME hardware on the RME ExpressCard adapter in a recent
ThinkPad would do well to turn off ExpressCard power management in BIOS!!

i'm on the aptosid distribution.
alsa-tools-gui is 1.0.25-2
although running jackd says "jackdmp 1.9.9", my installed debian package
is
jackd2 1.9.8~dfsg.4+20120529git007cdc37-4
alsa is 1.0.23+dfsg-4
and here's the clincher:
kernels up to and including 3.1-6 make it all work fine (with the same
versions
of other things as listed above). however, kernels 3.2.0-3 and higher all
cause
the issues reported above.
so, i guess the bottom-line question is whether other folks are running
hdsp
hardware successfully on 3.2 or more recent kernels, or whether we're all
stuck
at 3.1 for now?
amusing side-note: i'm trying to use a wacom tablet, which is fine with
the 3.2
and higher kernels, but not with the 3.1 -- haha!!
please let me know if you have any relevant observations on this; it'd be
nice to
have some reassurance that my multiface isn't seeing the beginning of the
end!

Peter, do you have PCI Express power management turned on in the BIOS on
your Thinkpad? I'm using a Multiface with the HDSPe expresscard on a
Thinkpad X220, working fine now. I had to turn that power management
option off because it was causing trouble. My issues were more severe
though. The whole system would be extremely slow to start up and then
respond to any of my actions with the expresscard plugged in. The exact
behaviour might be different from machine to machine though and I
believe it has to do with some incompatibility between the Thinkpad PCIe
implementation and the RME card. Seen these issues mentioned on RME
forums.
That you're having issues with newer kernels might somewhat support the
power management theory because Linux behaviour regarding PCIe ASPM
(active state power management) has changed at some point, 3.2 I think -
it is now supposed to better detect whether the system supports ASPM and
enable it to save power, whereas before it would not enable it on many
systems (info from phoronix,

Strange though that your self-compiled 3.0 has the problem as well.
Long post and might not even have anything to do with your problem but
worth a try I guess.

so, bottom line: anybody running RME hardware on the RME ExpressCard
adapter in a recent ThinkPad would do well to turn off ExpressCard power
management in BIOS!!
