hi...
i just wanted to anounce that i finally got round to
do some work on the good old fst.
Fixed most cavaets, included the vestige header.
So this is GPL stuff now. binary packages welcome.
get it via git: git clone git://repo.or.cz/fst.git
the homepage: http://www.joebutton.co.uk/fst/
perhaps some of he info is still valid :S

Its only a matter of make if your on 32bit.
for lash suport:
make -f Makefile.lash
On 64bit you need to have some 32bit libraries:
gtk libs and alsa, perhaps a 32bit lash
you also need to make sure a link ending with .so
exists for each library. there were some problems
with that before.
Also on 64bit jack-0.116.0 is required because fst is
a 32bit client.
i hope for packagers to jump in on this fast.
so that people are not having to wade through 32bit dependency hell.
The current version in git is very likely to become
fst-1.11 (schnaps is better than wine)

and stuff. So midi learn and stuff is not far away anymore.

Same here on mdv 32bit, wine 1.1.13, gcc-4.3, vestige, works great :)

compiles with vstsdk2.4-rev2 and runs even vst's which would not run before.

i use a 2.6.28.2 kernel (without rt patch) and a 2.6.26.8 (with rt14
patch); in my /etc/security/limits.conf i have these lines:
@audio - nice -19

and any other audio applications work.
i launch jackd (from qjackctl) with these options:
/usr/bin/jackd -R -P72 -dalsa -dhw:0,0 -r48000 -p256 -n2 -D -Phw:0
(i have an audigy es).

if you are getting zombifieds sometimes increasing the jack timeout helps.
This plugin works for me even with low-timeout.

yes. i removed the old alsa-seq code.
because i dont like to maintain the unnecessary complex way alsa-seq
needs to be handled. would have delayed the midi-learn feature.

jack, but, as soon as i click any button, they disconnect from jack.
are you on 64bit ?
there is a problem with jack-midi on 64bit.
i hope that i can commit the fix to jack-svn during this day
also increasing "start delay" or
"frames/period" value, jack zombifies.

So far so good. I think it's in a good enough state to warrant an official
release update to 1.8.
Anyway do the directions for an Ardour build with it remain the same? I'm
expecting issues with GUI but other than that, I have high hopes for this
one.

No. I'll be updating Ardour to use the new FST core code ASAP. Its not
just about doing a drop in replacement - there is some stuff on GUI side
that the host app (ardour) has to do.
Because of the use of Vestige, this will make it possible (not
necessarily advisable) for people to distribute binaries of Ardour with
VST support.

NI Reaktor doesn't update the GUI, when used with fst.
I haven't found any free plugin to reproduce this yet.

My tests are inconclusive, but I'm getting results similar to what
Martin Profittlich gets. However, I noted that sometimes the absence of
a GUI seemed to be related to lashd. Here's the process:
Load a plugin with fst.
Play a while.
Close the plugin instance.
Load another plugin with fst.
Here the GUI may or may not draw itself.
If not, I close the plugin and run 'killall lashd'.
Load the same plugin again.
Some misbehaving plugins will then draw their GUIs properly.
I also noted occasional zombification with JACK 0.115.6. I had problems
with 0.116 so I downgraded.
I'll keep testing and will send a more detailed report.

there was a race condition related to lash and GUI updates.
i think i have fixed it now. but i am still having some problems with
lash.
you may want to turn off lash in the meanwhile
make clean; make LASH_EXISTS=no
