I suppose that if the hardware can plug into the iBook there's a good
chance it will work. I have an iBook G4 which I dual-boot (Debian) and
it is able to talk to my midi controller (USB) just fine. In general, I
think you'll find hardware support to be basically equivalent.
Or it's better to compile the software I need
(jack, ardour,
zynaddsubfx) on MacOS X and buy a shiny new pc laptop when I'll have the
money (It will take a long time :-) )?
If the hardware works in OS X, and in Linux on x86, then it would
definitely surprise me if it didn't work in linux on your iBook.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the
right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
