Hello!
I'm having a bit of a worry over an istallation: I have a computer with a
windows on the first partition, unfortuintely it must remain there. Then on
the space behind it I want to install my Linux. How should I go about
bootloaders?
I could install grub in the MBR right up front, but then I should take care
of win's bootloader, in any case win is known to simply overwrite another
bootloader, if it feels like updating. Wouldn't really want to risk it. Is
there a way to put grub at the start of the Linux partition and make it known
to win, tat there's another bootloader sitting there, waiting to be started?

If you can convince win that the linux partition is a valid partition that can
be booted from, then you are fine. My expirience tells me that windows just
sees an unknown partition (they don't even know about the linux partition
types) and all they offer is to format them...
If you don't want to go the mbr-way, you can use an usb-stick to boot your
linux (and without windows would be booted). Or a good old boot-disk in
3.5"...
Or if you have two hard-disks, install the linux-bootloader on the second one,
make that the default and add the windows-entry booting from the first hd.

Normally there's no problem in installing linux bootloader in MBR
assuming you have installed windows first; you will get one entry in
the boot menu to boot windows and one to boot linux.
The only risk of windows overwriting it is if you reinstall it,
WindowsUpdate doesn't touch MBR.
If you really want to use windows MBR here's an example on how to add
a linux entry to boot.ini :

Note that in this case, installing GRUB on a partition, that partition
can't be formatted in XFS.

Hello Julien,
You didn't say which version of Windows you're running. With Win95
and Windows NT, I had no trouble installing Linux with GRUB using the
Master Boot Record (MBR). As has been said before, install Windows
first and Linux second.
But when I got my laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed, this did
not work. After Linux was installed, Vista would not boot. I did a
Vista reinstall and forgot about Linux on that machine.
On my desktop I had a SCSI drive and an IDE drive. Windows was on the
IDE drive and Linux was on the SCSI drive. I was able to Dual-boot
with Win95 or Windows NT with Linux, but I settled on a much easier
solution which didn't risk the Windows installation or the Linux
installation.
By having 2 drives in the desktop, I used the BIOS to select which
hard drive to boot first. If I wanted Windows, I booted the IDE
drive. If Linux, then I booted the SCSI drive.
In Linux I could view the entire Windows drive which was formatted in
FAT or FAT32. The reverse was not true since I was using EXT3 for the
Linux drive.
If you only have 1 hard drive, then the link to the howto already
provided should get you there, unless you have a Vista installation.
If you do have Vista, then I'd do more research to see if anyone is
dual-booting Vista and Linux.

I have several installs of Linux, Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7
using grub in MBR without problems, since 2002. Currently my laptop
has VIsta, Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic development with experimental
version of grub2 and ext4. One desktop has WinXP and Ubuntu 9.04 and
9.10 with grub1 with ext3.
Normally WIndows is installed first, and grub install in Linux could
find and chain the Windows boot loader correctly. Grub2 even found and
could boot the HP recovery partition of the notebook. The changes from
Winxp to Vista in boot configuration are already supported in grub1
and 2.
If you have to reinstall Windows, the Linux boot MBR will be
overwritten and grub should be reinstalled. It is not very complicated
and there are several howtos in the wild. Google is your friend.
In Ubuntu/Debian you need to boot a livecd, and reinstall grub.
I think that with RPM based systems is easy also.
The Ext3 installable FS driver from http://www.fs-driver.org/ works
well for reading and writing ext3 partitions from Windows. But beware
that it has a problem with recent installs of Linux that default to a
larger inode size than the hardcoded one in in the extfs driver. So
you have to force mkfs.ext3 to use an inode size of 128 to get it
working in Windows:

* Inodes that are larger than 128 bytes are not supported.
Last, it is a freeware, with closed source. There are other
alternatives not well polished.
Reading and writing NTFS partitions from Linux works very well with
the NTFS-3G fuse implementation. It is default in Ubuntu from some
time and I use it everyday in work.

and Windows NT, I had no trouble installing Linux with GRUB using the
Master Boot Record (MBR). As has been said before, install Windows
first and Linux second.
But when I got my laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed, this did
not work. After Linux was installed, Vista would not boot. I did a
Vista reinstall and forgot about Linux on that machine.

I had success many times resizing Windows XP and Vista
partitions with
GParted using Ubuntu LiveCD or USB stick (made using Unetbootin from
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net). Use manual partitioning only!

I used the Fedora 11 x86-64bit DVD installation disk for the Linux
install and specified during the install process to use the existing
main Vista partition (didn't touch the Vista hidden backup partition).
The only pre-Linux install preparation I did on the Vista side was to
run Scandisk and Defragment using the Vista hard drive tools.
So you're suggesting I try again?

Sorry, I can't comment much about Fedora, but I read some reports
about partitioning problems using Fedora's partition manager.
Maybe someone from RH/Fedora experts could answer you. I can give tips
from Ubuntu area only,
BTW your problem isn't related to Linux audio so more chance to get
help from lists/forums dedicated to your distribution.
