well, as my subject line says, I'm wondering about sysex dumping and receiving
- I always used to do it in Cakewalk to save synth setups or dump patches to
the synths, etc.
now I'm not seeing such a function in rosegarden (which is the only program
I've got to run so far - oh I haven't tried kmidi I'll do that)
is sysex implemented in any sequencers, or is there a stand alone?

afaik there is no explicit support for it.
you didnt say what synths you are using, but any realtime
midi sequencer should be able to just record the sysex
for later playback back into the synth. I no longer have
any outboard synths so i cant test, but worth a try if you
havnt already...

as I'm googling around, I've read a couple of things about being able to do
cat <sysexfilename> >/dev/midi00
but that has not yet worked :)
you didnt say what synths you are using, but any
realtime

any outboard synths so i cant test, but worth a try if you
havnt already...
actually right now I'm trying to dump qcard (programs, aka patches, aka
instruments aka sounds baby :) ) sysex files into an alesis s4 (the
quadrasynth rack mount version) - it's the S4, not the S4 plus - which makes
it a bit old :) so I have .SYX files - in cakewalk, I would go to the sysex
screen, and choose import, and import the .syx file into its sort of buffer,
and then just choose send, and the S4 would wake up and do a little dance and
then the info would be there...
I also stumbled upon mention of DOS emulation that would allow running of DOS
applications - that tickles my fancy because my preferred sequencer has been
Cakewalk 5.0 for DOS for almost ever :)

sounds like you want what i would call a midi librarian. I like the realtime
recording method for quickly saving a few sounds to reconstitute a
session without adding extra files, but is not good for maintaining a
library :-)
the other methods mentioned by yourself and Rick sound good.

I've managed to do it succesfully with /dev/sequencer and I'm using ALSA.
cat sysex.txt > /dev/sequencer
and my Korg 03R/W receives them happily. [.....]

New subject: [linux-audio-user] Audio editing issue
Hi. I need to do basic editing to a 8-channel drum track. What I'm looking
for is a program that would remember what I've done, so that I can repeat
the same actions to another file. So, instead of editing the 8 tracks
simultaneously, I would edit just one track and then perform the same
operations to the rest 7 tracks.
Any ideas?
