Thanks for the info but I still have a few questions.
Does the AI3 support 96 KHz like the ADI-8 DS does? I know it supports
24 bit, which is useful. Does the ADI-8 DS do anything the AI3 can't?
the price difference is huge, and I don't really see all that much of a
difference.

Nobody said you had to run mandrake ;-) But then again Debian is not as
"point and click" friendly either, I generally do my configs in a text
terminal.

actually i do too generally ;-)
mandrake's point and click-ness tends to be quirky... but i have this
kind of love/hate thing with mandrake, i've gotten to like its quirkiness ;)
anyhow i have a more serious question...
trying to do rpm -e on the various alsa packages that mandrake kindly
installed over the top of my alsa set up and seems to have caused this
problem...
trouble is rpm -e --force doesnt work, rpm says that will only work for
upgrade.....
any ideas on how i can get rid of libalsa2 ?

apps as you will have a heap of unmet dependecies.
Welcome to the world of running a suped up speed demon for Linux audio
where everyday is a host of new upgrades and fixes for bugs that noone
else has seen and the best way to ensure reliability is to compile the
apps locally :P

with respect, i have been compiling programs for years and still do so
frequently - you might remember i have been trying cvs alsa at various
stages (on a different HDD)
the reason i have rpms is because i did an upgrade install of mandrake
9.0 - it put them there for me.
now to remove them from rpm records i need to try and use rpm where
possible until the system is clean, otherwise i end up with these conflicts.
tbh i use tarballs where possible and rpm where lazy. according to
marcel gagne, the best sysadmins are lazy ;-)

oh yeah
i also tried chowning all the sound devices to root & group root
just in case there was a problem with group audio
but that didnt work either
now im not sure how to get them back!!!! anyone got a list of what the
correct permissions should be?

If this is still on Mandrake 9.0 you are dealing with devfs and devfsd
(device file system and device file system daemon). These create,
delete, and change permissions / ownership on files in /dev as side
effects of initializing device drivers or lookups of specific filenames
by programs. The exact details are highly configurable.
What happens if you ask the alsa "aconnect" utility to list output
devices, i.e., "aconnect -o -l" ???

Just for the record, setting up ALSA on Mandrake 9 is
usually as simple as setting up modules.conf, and
restarting ALSA ("service alsa restart"). The problem
in this case is a conflict between the rpm's and
tarball installations.
I'll be reposting my little Mandrake ALSA guide

Its not what you see, but what you hear that makes the difference.
Also, where can I find a copy of the HDSP 9652
drivers?
"snd-hammerfall-mem + snd-hdsp" in the alsa drivers, make sure you have
a very current copy.
