I've got 2 dead sound devices and am wondering if there is any way to
determine if the death is complete or a software issue?
1. My Audiophile 2496 has been working for years in my computer. A few
months ago it just stopped. At the time I figured it was a software
upgrade issue with pulseaudio, etc. so I pulled the card and ran with
the on-board sound on my Asus motherboard. Didn't sound wonderful, but
not to bad ... and I really did intend to upgrade the software "real
soon" so I just lived with it. Until today...
2. the on board sound on the Asus MB decided that "white noise" was
much more appreciated by me than the Ornette Coleman which I was
playing. Okay, it might be right ... but several reboots later it was
still insisting on static.
So, I reinstalled the 2496 but it refuses to output anything. Even
tried with the envy24control program and was unable to get any bars to
show any activity.
Ended up by installing a cheap soundblaster card from the bottom of my
junk box. It's playing right now, and it's not great, but not really
awful.
So, any way to see if either the on board or the 2496 has any life left in them?
Failing that, what's the current recommended consumer grade card? I'll
probably never use the inputs on the card for recording.

hmmm. what about trying this command to see if the correct
module is loaded?
lsmod | grep 1712 # should show snd-ice1712
If that fails, you can try unplugging and replugging the card.
If the driver is loaded, try checking this:
cat /proc/asound/cards
If that works, you could still be having a mixer issue.

Maybe try booting one of the Linux audio distro CDs (pure:dyne, Ubuntu
Studio, Musix, etc) and see if the sound devices work there?

If any of the proposed software-fixes do not help, check the main-board and the
2496 for blown up capacitors. Normally all should be cylinder-like with flat
bottom and top. If any have a round bottom and/or top, they are bad. The more
blown capacitors there are on the motherboard, the worse the supplied power
becomes, the more capacitors blow...

There are (very) longstanding issues with pulseaudio and ice1712 cards
: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/178442
(workarounds included).
If lspci /lsmod (etc) shows that your card is at all alive, I would
agree with the suggestion to try the puredyne live cd/dvd (pulseaudio
not included), or to just try the famous 'cure all ubuntu sound
issues' workaround, which is to kill/uninstall pulseaudio.

I've had a good look at the audiophile card it it certainly appears to
be okay. Hard to tell with all the tiny wires inside the chips,
though.

Yes, that was my guess when it stopped working some months ago right
after an auto-upgrade of my ubuntu 9.10.
Right now I think I'll wait until I upgrade to 10.04 before doing much
more. Does anyone know if this card actually works with the latest
pulse audio? Before dicking around with all the work arounds I'd
really like to know that the card DOES work. Yes, lspci, etc shows the
card properly installed. And the pulse manager brings up the output
choices.

I have my Delta 1010LT working with Pulse audio on Ubuntu 10.04LTS.
The workaround that I used is here:

and other suggestions in the bug report that I referenced previously.
( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/178442 ).
To the best of my knowledge, if it gets the Delta series working,
it'll work for the Audiophile too.
