Greetings:
I have to write some documentation on DVD/VCD players for Linux. I own
a nice new DVD player (dmesg says it's a LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163D, ATAPI
CD/DVD-ROM drive) that works well on my machine, though I did have to
discover a few secrets for glitch-free viewing (e.g. my nVidia card
should have its double-buffering turned off). I'm writing not only about
viewing video discs but also recording and ripping them. Thus, a few
questions for anyone in the LAU community using a DVD player and/or
recorder.
1. What software do you use for viewing DVDs ?
2. Do you use that software for watching AVI, MPEG, or other video
formats ?
3. What software do you use for ripping/encoding DVDs ?
4. If you have a DVD recorder, please let me know how well it works
for you under Linux, what outstanding problems exist, what software you
use, etc.
5. Overall, how would you rate Linux DVD support, particularly
compared to Windows or the Mac ?
I don't own a DVD recorder and I'm curious about Linux users'
experiences with them.
I've been trying to rip DVDs using the dvd::rip software (based on
transcode) but keep receiving read errors. If anyone has any special
tips for DVD ripping I'm interested in them too.
My system includes an 800 MHz AMD CPU, two 15GB hard drives (tuned),
512 MB RAM, an SBLive soundcard, and an nVidia GForce2 (64 MB video
RAM). Kernel is 2.4.18 patched for low-latency. I've been using MPlayer
0.90 for viewing AVI and other video file formats. I was using MPlayer
for watching DVDs too but have recently switched to Ogle (a better DVD
player, IMO). Frame rate is normally between 24 and 29 fps (that's what
MPlayer reports, I don't really know if it's any different under Ogle).
I don't really know how to massage MPlayer's parameters, so any advice
for improving video file playback performance is most welcome. Ogle is
pretty straightforward, and the Ogle FAQ yielded some very useful tips
(particularly the pointer to the xvattr utility).
So, how's *your* DVD player performing under Linux ? :)

Greetings:
Well, I received four replies, and I thank Jan, Raph, Hartmut, and
Maarten for their input. If those replies were at all indicative it
seems there's a 50/50 split between MPlayer and Xine for viewing DVDs.
It also appears that no one is too crazy about transcode (I didn't have
the problems reported, but I'm still unable to rip a DVD under Linux).
I downloaded and built the very latest Xine, and I must say, it rocks.
Alas, it's crashing my X server or my window manager (or both). After
using Xine my X session segfaults if I switch workspaces in Blackbox.
Does anyone else know about that problem ?
I must add that watching the Matrix:Reloaded MOV trailer in Xine with
full sound was an exciting experience... !

Not forgetting Ogle of course. it was the first to have menu support,
which is important if you have kids who like the special features and
games on DVDs.
We've watched hundreds of discs using Ogle and Blackbox, and only get
stutters if the disc has fingerprints on it. Only two discs were
unplayable - both rental copies that looked like they had been
cleaned with sandpaper - and only one crashed Ogle.
This turned out to be a manufacturing fault in that particular title,
which stopped standalone DVD players at the same point.

My local library has DVDs for circulation so I've been testing a variety
of titles. You can imagine the conditions I've encountered, but so far
only one disc has been so bad as to be unwatchable. That one was a DVD
of Bruce Lee's "Chinese Connection", it looked as though it were used in
some of the more physical scenes in the film... ;) Plus, the transfer
was awful anyway.
MPlayer, Xine, and Ogle certainly seem to disprove any notion that we're
starved for DVD player support. But I'm not at all familiar with what
software exists for Win/Mac users, and I'm not sure what they might have
that we lack. Btw, I was even able to play a DVD that would *not* play
on my girlfriend's standalone DVD player, it was a pirated copy of Vin
Diesel's "xXx" that Ivy's boy picked up somewhere. Ivy's player
wouldn't
even acknowledge the disc in the drive, but MPlayer rocked right through
it.

I am anxiously anticipating the day I can throw out my WinXP box and trade
it in for a fresh install of Linux to do my audio work.
I have been looking around on the web for a soft sampler for Linux, but
haven't come up with anything. There are virtual synths galore, but no full
featured soft samplers, ala Gigastudio, Kontakt, Halion, etc. Am I missing
anything?
I don't know much about csound, but am intrigued by it. Would there
possibly be a way to write the equivalent of a soft sampler using csound? I
suppose that would require a realtime version of csound like DirectCSound
for Win32. Can csound for Linux work in realtime?
Has anyone tried getting Native Instruments Kontakt (or any other Windows
soft sampler) to run in Wine? I'm curious how/if this would work.
I run a console-only install of Mandrake on a 233Mhz as my webserver off of
my cable modem connection, so I don't have X where I can test any of this.

Yes: legal fees. Apparently one of those companies found it expedient to
patent the process of streaming samples from disk. Imagination in the
creative domain is often simply not enough for such companies, they want
to make damned sure that no-one else knows how to do it without paying
them first. And of course they're not going to manufacture a native
Linux version.

Yes, beautifully, but you'll need to have a kernel patched for
low-latency.
There has already been some discussion on the Csound mail list regarding
the use of Csound for such a purpose. The discussions are basically
stymied by the fact of that truly noxious patent.

I've always felt that Wine's overhead was too great for any realtime
audio work, but recently I've read reports of people using Rebirth and
other Windows music and sound apps under newer versions of Wine. I guess
it's time to go back to the vino...

test them anyway.

yes it can run in realtime.
As for writing a sampler in csound: csound can both load short samples into
memory using some of the GEN routines, and it can use the diskin opcode
to play sounds directly from disk. However, the latter isn't very
responsive in realtime IIRC, so for good playback you need to use
the in-memory approach, which means you're limited by your physical RAM.

No, you're not missing anything I know about. There is a low-level project
that is moving along very slowly on a Linux sampler, but I haven't seen a
message on that list in probably two months.

I cannot get Acid Pro, GigaSampler or Kontakt to install. Maybe someone
better than I could figure it out, but it's not plug and play...

I'd like to add two programs to the list, that you already got:
fluidsynth/swami and Pd.
fluidsynth is a sample player at heart. It expects to get its samples
in Soundfont format, which you can create using Swami (or the older
verision called Smurf).
fluid itself cannot sample, but it is very comfortable if you want to
use sampled sound as traditional instruments (read: with MIDI)
Another solution, that is capabale of way more things (including
running fluidsynth inside) is Pd. You can think of Pd as a Csound with
graphical interface, but that doesn't really cover it. Pd is a modular
synth, that of course also can deal with samples. It is very efficient
at realtime usage. You have to build a sampler with Pd yourself, but
it also gives you the chance to build it yourself.
Pd comes with objects for all kind of sample manipulation: You get
several (looping) players, disk streaming players, granulating sample
players, fluidsynth as external and much more.
You just need to expect a learning curve with Pd - at first it's
shallow, then can become rather steep. Granted, it's not Halion, but
depending on what exactly you want in a sample player, Pd can deliver
(as can jMax or Spiral Synth, to be fair)

I've contacted you and spoke with you a few times before about your
excellent tutorial and your site. I'm new to Linux. I'm wanting to record
a hillbilly punk-bluegrass band.
I even jumped on your recommendation for the STaudio DSP unit that I believe
you have. Anyway I got a bizarre question.
I can't my STAudio unit to work in Windows. It only works in Linux, which
will suite me fine but I wanted to use some Acid music loops with my
endeavors.
I'm wanting to setup a multi track recorder. I think you remember me, we
communicated at length about it.
Any tips other than your excellent site?
ps. you have got to try to play hamonica and standup bass at the same time.
i did that the other night and it was nearly comical. i had to customize my
harmonica holder cause it wouldn't stay on.

I do not miss anything i really need when viewing DVDs. I had Power DVD
on Windows before i get Xine working decently and i do not see a reason
why i should return to it.
About Performance/Quality:
I would say, the pictureQuality in Xine is slightely better than the
one in PowerDVD , Navigating the Movie ist smoother/faster (witch might
be because the Data-transfer in LINUX is by far better than in Win32).
BTW: sound works great in Xine via alsa`s oss-emulation, i`m a bit of a
puritane about sound:real Stereo in real HIFI is IT - DolbySurround etc
does not hold my interest ;-)

I calculate the crop value with:

Yes, even quicktime and wma. I even use the mplayer-mozilla-plugin, so I
can directly watch win streaming stuff. It's just wonderfull!

DVD viewing is ok, but not perfect. We all know
why and we all know that
if Linux had the specifications DVD viewing would be better than under
other OSes. DVD ripping is just _fantastic_, I made lots of ripping for
years under Win/Mac, mencoder is the most powerfull, precise and
reliable tool I've ever seen.

supported,
just like usual cd writers.

I can not use it, because I
use Linux under ppc, transcode is written in
i386 assembler. Mplayer works perfectly under ppc linux.

Marvellous, I do not
use anything else.

For the record, xine works very well on my 600 MHz Thinkpad with it's
DVD/CD player. It's working hard doing the decoding, but it's pretty clean
and jitter-free, and quite well-behaved. Brings the battery life down to
about 0.01 ms, though...
Perhaps you should mention the supported hardware decoder cards? Isn't
there one from Creative? Anybody using hardware DVD-decoding in Linux?
