Any SC experts out there ?
I'm trying to install SuperCollider (from the AUR package) and get
the following rather uniformative error:
fons@c252:~> sclang
init_OSC
compiling class library..
NumPrimitives = 532
pass 1 done
ERROR: There is a discrepancy.
numClassDeps 0 gNumClasses 80
That's without any ~/.sclang.cfg or ~/.sclang.sc.
Strange thing is I did exactly the same yesterday evening on another
system, using the same package, and everything works fine there.
Anyt help appreciated !

not me :) I remember once getting that exact same error, but can't
find the mails where I solved it... I have a feeling it has something
to do with things in ~/share/SuperCollider, but can't really remember...
However, I suggest you ask on the [high traffic] sc-users mailing list -
you usually get replies in minutes.

it didn't support 64-bit systems.
Is the system it works on a 32-bit and the one it doesn't work on a 64-bit, by any
chance?

No. But it seems that having an empty ~/.sclang.cfg (or one
with everything commented out) isn't the same as having none
at all, and is enough to make things fail. As does disabling
the 'optional' Crucial and Jitlib packages. And SwingOSC (the
jre based GUI extension) fails as well.
There are lots of other very weird things, but so far I
managed to make it work more or less.

Please, do not spread misinformation...
SuperCollider supports 64-bit, both the language (sclang) and
synthesis server (scsynth and supernova).

I'm no expert, but I have been busy writing a lengthy article about the
latest Git version of SC3. I've run into that discrepancy problem when I
had installed Quarks or plugins that conflicted with something already
installed with the system. A directory is set up for the Quarks that is
in fact simply a directory of links to the actual packages. You can
remove or hide the links directory and restart the interpreter, that
should clear up the discrepancy (if it's caused by a quark - I'm not
sure what to do if a plugin is causing the trouble).
Your ~/.sclang.cfg is typically used to point to the server location,
set up JACK I/O ports, and set the path to the SwingOSC jarfile (if
wanted). I assume you started the server, then ran sclang ? Have you
tried setting up emacs or vi/vim for use with SC ? It's really the
better way of working with sclang.
Btw, what version are you testing ? I've been working only with the
unreleased 3.5, I don't know if my advice conflicts with the 3.4 series.

That would be ~/.sclang.sc, not .cfg. The .cfg one is meant to select
libraries etc. The example one supplied contains lines to uncomment if
you don't need Crucial or JitLib. Which I did. When this failed, I
commented out everything, same result. Then I removed the file, and
things started to work. So it seems it's now impossible not to load
Crucial and/or JitLib.

Yes, normally I use scel. I just started sclang in a terminal to
exclude anything scel being the cause of failure.

Also tried SwingOSC (with the necessary stuff in ~/.sclang.sc) but it
failed as well, with lots of messages about methods not being found.
Which means that even more of the help files are useless as they use
plot and scope all the time.

Actually there is one for Python too, but it's not fully functional.

anyways, I don't hate sclang, I just remember that achieving some
things with it has required more frustration than with other
languages - but I also have to say that I've been using it mostly for
managing HID devices and midi, something that it can do but certainly
isn't its main focus. Probably if I'd use it for audio synthesis I'd
have a different idea.

I surely don't hate it, it just gets on my nerves more than
some others. And the help pages are really lacking basic info.
Simple example:
Help LFNoise1
Generates linearly interpolated random values at a rate.
freq - approximate rate at which to generate random values.
OK. But:
- What is the range of the random values (for mul: 1, add: 0) ?
- How are they distributed ?
It's not really a big effort to include that info. Of course
I can write to some code to find out. But having to do that
almost every time I try to find out something gets tedious.

glass, but with a definite pitch so you can make chords with
it. Any ideas ? :-)

oh, I hate to insist, but this question would probably generate a flock

Maybe sclang is reading from system wide places like root/ and
/usr/share/SuperColllider
Check those too.
