I seem to have sound now through my SB Live card, but none through my
EMU 0404. I don't think there are any drivers written for it. If I
unmute the alsamixer volumes and the run "/usr/sbin/alsactl store", will
it remain unmuted through successive reboots?

Right, no drivers for the new EMU stuff (yet).

Yes, as long as you (or an init script) runs "alsactl restore" on the
next boot.
Save/restore mixer settings should work OOTB with any decent distro,
normal users should never have to use alsactl.
