Hi,
Music is digitalized now and so I use more and more my pc for listening
to music. I guess this are just modern times....
But this are also the times of a planet what get destroyed and less
important money just disappears...
So I want to save as much energy as possible without buying another pc.
Is there a way to handle this? What are the tricks or are there 'green'
distro's?

Hi,
I tend to apply to my desktop PC and my server what I do to preserve
battery on my laptop. There are lots of possible tuning that you can do to
make things better. Googling around for tutorials on laptop energy saving
should get you started. The basics would be a kernel with dynticks enabled
and cpufreq with a conservative or ondemand default governor. Powertop will
also come in handy : http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/powertop/
There are also some stuff that can be done on the harware side, like for
instance getting a better power supply unit. Most common PSUs have a 60%
yield, a green one needs to be at least 80%. Those of course are a little
more expensive. I am personally very happy with my Seasonic PSU... See here

Laptop versions of kernels tend to want to save power to increase
battery life. Distributions may offer different versions of kernels
for use, even within the same distribution release. For instance,
Mandriva has laptop, multi-processor, server, large RAM size,
desktop, and multimedia kernels, plus some permutations of those.
For listening to compressed music with a player, the laptop kernel
should save power and be adequate for the music. Having power saving
hardware, e.g. super efficient power supply and very few add-in
cards, can help a lot too.

the smallest and most efficient program for a given task (you could
look at applications recommended for older/slower computers like
blackbox / evilwm / rox-filer / xfce / lxde / etc. and using a command
line application whenever possible rather than a full GUI will save a
large amount of CPU / disk usage as well.

Playlist on the commandline is one of the easier things: just add multiple
files as arguments. mplayer is able to cope with that. And the < and > buttons

supply, and Core2Duo is much more efficient than my old Athlon 2000. If

about 30W all up, about quarter of the main PC.

the number to play my preference, for example - track 111.

I have no idea unless there's some kind of programming interface to
mplayer that could be used?

I see there's also the alsaplayer-daemon, which "provides a
non-interactive (daemon) interface to the player, so that it is only
accessible via a remote control application." Perhaps the original
poster could use something like that, if the text version isn't able to
do what's wanted.

/usr/bin/play comes with the sox package and will play audio files.
If it's built with MP3 support, it will play those files too.
