Hi there
I've been reading the list for some weeks now, but did not see anything
related to USB, so I'm just asking : Is *my* setup "viable" ?
Athlon2000XP TBird
256Mg RAM (I know, I know:( )
Novation X-Station 25, latest firmware (1.3)
Agnula/Demudi 1.2.1b
Gnome
Hydrogen => Jack => Ardour
And, heck, *everything is working smoothly* (Ardour is amazing, really
amazing), exept for one detail : The monitoring is crackling, buzzing,
no wait, only crackling.
But when I look at the waveform, in Ardour, it looks pristine, I'm
pretty sure that if the cracks heard were actually recorded, I'd see
them on the waveform, right ? I think I tried everything that jack
allows in terms of bitrate, and frequency.
Everything is package-based, and being the lamer that I am, I'd really
like to keep it this way. To put it another way : I never got any
tarball to compile properly, even the slightest windowmaker applet.
Basically, what I want is multiple (up to 16 I'd say) audio tracks, and
hydrogen sync'ed to it. Is that even english ? I hope I'm making sense,
please excuse me if I don't.
What I expect from this quistion is something along the lines of :

No. The snd_usb_audio module works great and can really handle
a huge amount of devices.

Well, when recording one stereo track 256MB RAM should be
enough, depending how many applications you're running, of
course ;-) .

If you're using qjckctl,
* disable the option "Autorefresh connections patchbay" on the
options tab in the prefs
* Try to use 3 periods/buffer
* load the snd_usb_module with the following parameter:
modprobe snd-usb-audio nrpacks=1

I do use qjckctl, and I'll be trying these as soon as I get back from
work tonight ! Sounds exactly like the kind of wizardry I'm looking for ! :)

audio get resampled to 48, like the ALSA plughw layer does? Or do they
use 44.1 with variable period lengths?

buffer?
I have the same as Frank Barknecht, a Terratec Aureon USB (not
V2), and @ 2 periods I get crackled sound when playing an ogg
file via xmms. At 3 periods I "only" get some xruns from time
to time, but gerneral sound is OK.

My tascam does crackled sound with 2 periods per buffer... but only
with low buffer-sizes. If I want stable sound without problems on my
old laptop I have to use bufersizes of 1024 where 2 periods give no
problem...

This WAS the trick !
Now *every* playback is faultless ! The monitoring of a Hydrogen session
into Ardour is nickel ! (familiar french for "really good")
When you come to think of it, 3 periods/buffer, that was obvious, my
daughter said "you should've ask me" ;) hehe
Seriously, thank you for nothing short of making my home studio *work*.

Probably. It kind of depends what sound you're recording, and whether
you know what it *should* look like.
It's easiest to see if you record a test signal - like a pure sine wave,
at a constant frequency and amplitude.
Then, zoom right in, and see if it looks clean.

Have you tried not running Gnome? With only 256MB, you may want to
try a more lightweight desktop. I'm sure you can find packages for
fluxbox or openbox (although you may find them to be less comfortable
than Gnome). XFCE also seems to use a little less memory.
Though I doubt that would help the "crackling" in your audio output.

Hi,
Though I doubt that would help the
"crackling" in your
audio output.
my machine once did this because the following kernel options
have been set *en*abled:
[ ] Enforce USB bandwidth allocation (EXPERIMENTAL)
[ ] Dynamic USB minor allocation (EXPERIMENTAL)
If both are enabled, happy re-compiling :) .
