One of my last excuses for having a windows box is BandInABox. Are there any linux programs that could approximate this? All i need is the ability to type in a chord sequence, then have it play that for me in a jazz/swing style. I've been paring down all the studio gear I accumulated, because most of it is irrelavant, but I do a lot with a 533 PII with an sblive card, once soundfonts are loaded on the card there's no perceptable latency when midi sequncing my own samples, but my next project is a jazz recording with acoustic guitar, flute chromatic harmonica and some electronic backgrounds I plan to generate from csound, before I've been making most of my music with a korg electribe and an asrx sampler recorded and mixed in audacity, but as I learn more about how o use alsa I'm trying to get rid of all my extra hardware. I also do live electronics and actually had my first successful all-linux live show. Yes indeed. We started with a real cheapo Samick 8:2 mixer (35 UK pounds trade-in) which at least allowed us to use mics with balanced cables and XLR connectors. We have now upgraded to an 8-bus Seck mixer with phantom power. These are about the cheapest pro mixers on the second hand market in the UK- they were made in the 80's and early 90's and were usually sold as a bundle with Fostex 8-track and 16-track analogue tape machines. Ours has 12 XLR inputs with a 1/4" tape monitor input on each, plus various 1/4" auxillary inputs and 8 independent 1/4" outputs - hence the choice of an M Audio Delta 1010. They go for about 200-250 pounds here, more if they have the optional meterbridge. Replacement external power supplies are available, but they are expensive - so if you see one cheap without a PSU, that's why.
