and came the report on mit's 100$pc

is it likely that someday
an over the hill guy in japan can get it
and custumize it as a live-coding-dj-machine?
well a bit joking but yes
would like to have this kind of GUI
if having something besides the terminal
anything like that going on
in this LA world?

You are aware that the OLPC-Laptop is meant to be a kind of charity
project for developing countries, aren't you? (I won't debate, if it
is successful with that goal.) That is, it's meant for poor children,
not for poor geeks.
You may try *bay for cheap old laptops, that are of comparable speed.

Yeah, the OLPC currently costs $175 to make, whereas the Eee will
supposedly retail for $200. (Whenever the OLPC is available here,
they're saying it'll be sold at double its material cost, minimum.)
I'm thinking of picking up an Eee for my mom for her birthday or xmas
(their old desktop machine is pretty much her husband's personal
Solitaire game), and if I do, you bet I'll be trying to get Jack
working on it. Don't know how successful I'll be since it tragically
runs Xandros which last I heard didn't ship a lot of audio stuff
standard (and the Eee will be stripped down further still, to fit on
its little flash drive.)
Of course, by the time I do that, someone else on this list will
undoubtedly have already gotten one. They're too cheap not to.

if it was yellow i'd love it more
specs and dev might be ultra different from normal pcs(?)

just too many things to suffer from?
boy but that desktop is cute
it might be hard for the over-the-hill to get the real hardware
but would be nice
if a tiny-no-oo-but-playing-with-music oriented distribution for normal pcs
comes out

There are several quite famous audio people involved in the OLPC, like
Barry Vercoe of Csound and Miller Puckette of Pd/Max fame. The
OLPC sound system also was presented in an interesting talk at the
last Linux Audio Conference.

This over the hill one(me)got to play with one about a month ago.
I poked around in it a bit, /proc stuff, and all of the setup files etc. It's nothing
special or hard to mess around with. And as everyone knows, the hardware specs and
everything else are published. I found it to be real cute machine, bright colors, strong
plastic. I asked about price and they said about $400 for the rest of us :)

If you've ever tried to use your notebook at an outside gig you will be
very appreciative of the olpc innovation with the new screen. It uses
"some kind of diagonally referenced pixel grid"(TM) where each pixel can
produce both black and color so it is viewable in direct sunlight.
Also they consume only one tenth of the power that the newest green
machines are spec'd at.
