I've created a Wiki page with my findings of using real-time,
low-latency audio on the RPi: http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/raspberrypi
It's not complete and the RPi needs some more hacking to squeeze out the
last bits of processing power that can be dedicated to things like
samplers, synths, effects and guitar amp emulators.

Hello Jeremy!
Thank you for this wiki and the small demo, which I haven't heard yet. I
have got a Raspberry Pi here and I had been wondering, how much I might
integrate it into an audio setup. Perhaps use it as a chance to travel light.
Most of my audio software doesn't require too much CPU power and there's no
GUI overhead into the bargain.

Hello Julien,
I think you will be pleasently surprised by what the RPi is capable of.
Especially when overclocked and when you don't need ridiculously low
latencies you have quite some CPU cycles to spare.

I have worked on a 700MHz CPU for quite a while and I know, that LS and
fluidsynth certainly don't demand much. But I'm looking forward to putting it
through its paces.

Making it happen involves removing any personal data (passwords, personal
samples)
from the SD card, and then doing a dd => linuxAudioPi.img

I think I'll force my DIY attitude onto others on this one ;)

This also applies for the RPi (though the RPi doesn't have a BIOS)
especially regarding external hardware. Some USB audio interfaces work
fine with the default settings, others fail to work properly. And not
all RPi's are the same, between boards there can be differences between
memory and ethernet adapters for instance.

Totally agreed. Unfortunately the audio out on the RPi is not that

At the moment there is no audio expansion board available yet. So with
the RPi your best bet is an USB interface.

I've been also trying to get some kind of RaspMusix, but my steps are short
for now. I tried Raspbian image and then installed Ardour-arm, but Jack
didn't start although I tried to configure several times with some
parameters that usually work (including NoRT, several different periods and
frames/sec).
Another issue is that I couldn't get HDMI-audio, even making the
adjustments on the Raspberry configuration file after finding pieces of
information here and there doing some searches on the web.
So there I left with Raspbian.
Then I found RaspBMC[1] (for multimedia purpose) and it just worked
out-of-the-box.
And here I am for now. I'll try to keep reporting.

How about compiling software on the arm, is is possible to compile and
run stuff like ams, fluidsynth, pd, csound, sooperlooper, freewheelin
and such on raspberrypi?
How's the quality of the onboard audiocard? Is there also audio in?

Hello Atte,
The Model A is $25 yes. But that model comes without an ethernet
connection. All the software you mention runs on the Raspberry Pi and no
need to compile it because packages are available in the default repos
of the distros that are available for the RPi (Debian, Arch, Fedora).
Don't expect great performance, especially GUI driven software might be
problematic. pd should be no issue though, Miller Puckette even released
a SD card image specifically for the RPi. If you want to compile newer
versions, that's possible too, but something like guitarix already takes
hours to compile natively.
The Raspberry Pi has no audio in and the quality of the audio out is not
really HiFi, it's actually 11bit. Also because the kernel module for the
onboard soundchip has no ALSA mmap support you can't use it directly
with JACK.
Audio out (and in) is easy to solve though with a $3 USB audio
interface. I'm awaiting a Behringer UCG102 clone that I'd like to use
with the RPi which would solve both the audio in and out issues too.
I've also ordered a HDMI to DVI cable with a separate audio output just
to test if the output of such a cable would be usable.

It's not a Dan Armstrong/Ampeg. It looks like a Lucite Les Paul. It
appears to be a Gibson neck, but could be one of the Asian clone

It's a lucite Les Paul, so not a Dan Armstrong (which are double cuts).
Bought it a few years ago in a now defunct UK webshop
(http://wesleyguitars.co.uk/). It's Korean made. You can still get them
but they need some extra attention.

appears to be a Gibson neck, but could be one of the Asian clone
makers. Not sure what brand the guitar/body is.

I bought some cheap switches and I've got some broken things lying
around and my ultimate goal would be to make a simple USB-MIDI
footswitch with some extra knobs to adjust parameters. But that will be
a long term project (two kids, solderingironophobia).

Answered this in another mail. In addition, there are some manufacturers
that use PMMA/acrylic/lucite/perspex bodies. The most well-known at the
moment is ECG (Electrical Guitar Company). They have two lucite
signature models with aluminum necks (how awesome is that), the Brent
Hinds (Mastodon) Custom and one of the coolest contemporary guitars, the
King Buzzo (Melvins) Standard:

and my ultimate goal would be to make a simple USB-MIDI footswitch with some
extra knobs to adjust parameters. But that will be a long term project (two
kids, solderingironophobia).
I am guessing that for stage use presets
would work better, though a volume control with a foot board could do Wah
(or other variable effects) as well as just volume.
True, I've never used wah or volume pedals myself so I'm not that much
interested in such effects.

Answered this in another mail. In addition, there are some manufacturers
that use PMMA/acrylic/lucite/perspex bodies. The most well-known at the
moment is ECG (Electrical Guitar Company). They have two lucite signature
models with aluminum necks (how awesome is that), the Brent Hinds (Mastodon)

Yes, that's why I'm now using a powered USB hub and I plug the UA-25
into the hub. The hub has a 5V/3.7A power supply. In my case I also
experienced SD corruption when using a GPU frequency higher than 250.

overclocking just increases the CPU freq from 700MHz to 800MHz. I
didn't want to risk my SD because I red that issue you mention, but it

waste one USB slot, and I'm afraid that if I buy another SD card it
could be corrupted again and then it would be wasted money.

You can boot from an USB stick connected to a hub. I've tested this when

a lot less responsive and audio was completely distorted.

other it unmount itself or say that it's not possible.
In worst case, I could plug a USB stick on one slot and in the other
the USB hub with the UA and mouse/keyboard/midi-usb..., but I would
like to control what happen with SDs cards and when they get
unusable/broken because of some corruption.

Hi, thanks for sharing.
The idea is simply brilliant and it works quite smoothly following the
wiki[1] (Thanks again Jeremy!), i've got a UA25EX[2] and a Terratec
Aureon dual-usb[3].
Just a couple of things i noticed:
1)Using the nexus7 power adaptor everything works fine, it's a 5w 2.0A.
2)if you run jack with following command as the wiki suggested "jackd
-P70 -p16 -t2000 -dalsa -dhw:UA25 -p128 -n3 -r44100 -s" make sure to add
the background "&" at the end of the line, without this the sound was
lousy and glitchy, at least for my UA25EX.
3)Using this usb wireless adapter[4], so in a headless fashion, i had
many jack's disconnection no matter what frames/periods i choose.Any
suggestion to improve it?
4)I really love the tubescreamer in guitarix, it sounds GREAT!
5)I've got my PI amp now saved in a separate sd card, now i'm able to
switch my pi from a server into an amp by just replacing the sd card,
how lovely it is!?
p.s. I was thinking to install Ubuntu on my nexus7 to control Guitarix
(headless through ssh -X) with the touch screen!!!

You're welcome! To me the RPi is just another device running Linux. And
if it runs Linux it can run JACK and some of my favorite software. I'm
sometimes baffled by the immense detour people are taking just to get 8
note polyphony out of the RPi for instance. Or using some real-time
effects. Or building a drum sequencer. All the stuff is already there!
But no, apparently they prefer to reinvent the wheel.

So if you don't run it in the background sound is lousy and glitchy?
That's weird as it shouldn't make a difference? I did find that raising
JACK's rtprio even more (I'm now using 84) decreases the number of glitches.

At the moment, no. I don't have any experience with WiFi dongles and the
RPi. I should give it a try.

I'm at 950MHz as my SD cards got corrupted with higher settings. This is
because higher settings demand a higher core_freq which was the culprit
in my case, the SD cards I'm using can't cope with higher core_freq
settings.

Something has occurred to me, since the release of the new guitarix LV2
plugins it should be possible to run them headless using ecasound from a
bash script. My current plan, however slow it is for me to impliment, is to
create a live guitar rig that can also display lead sheets on a mic stand
mounted lcd screen. I'll be controlling it with a Behringer BCF-1010. I
have most of the components now except the RPI, hdmi to vga adapter,
powered hub, uca-202. This should give me a channel out for backing track
plus guitar out, a channel out for cue/monitor mix, and an in for guitar.
That plus I need to figure out how to control the lead sheet page flips
with midi. Anyways very exciting.

That should work. You could also use jalv but with ecasound you can load
multiple plugins and connect those within ecasound.

create a live guitar rig that can also display lead
sheets on a mic stand
mounted lcd screen. I'll be controlling it with a Behringer BCF-1010. I
have most of the components now except the RPI, hdmi to vga adapter,
powered hub, uca-202. This should give me a channel out for backing track
plus guitar out, a channel out for cue/monitor mix, and an in for guitar.
That plus I need to figure out how to control the lead sheet page flips
with midi. Anyways very exciting.
