It seems to me you could use the "save state" options, always
working from the "edit history" (i.e. the program that describes
the changes you made at various points). You'd still have various
in-between takes, but they'd be handled automatically by Snd;
your originals would never be touched, and you could backup to
any point in the sequence. I didn't realize this was a stumbling
block -- will look at it more closely -- perhaps all it needs
is better documentation.

ok, i think i should spend some more time trying to make this work, but
i am going to have to throw some more hardware into the ring to do it.
currently, i have 768Mb RAM, which can easily get tight for a multitrack
session at better-than-CD sr and/or resolution. it is not uncommon for
me to be working on 20 tracks with an uninterrupted length of 30 or 40
minutes. this is really not currently feasible in RAM.
